1. Where is Ha Giang located?

Ha Giang is a mountainous province located in the far north of Vietnam, approximately 318 km from Hanoi by land. It shares its border with China.

This province is characterized by a majestic landscape of limestone mountains and steep valleys, with an average altitude ranging between 800 m and 1,200 m above sea level.

In 2010, the Dong Van Stone Plateau Geopark was recognized by UNESCO as a member of the Global Geoparks Network. Ha Giang is also home to numerous ethnic communities, each with its own customs, cultural traditions, and vibrant festivals.

2. What is the weather like in Ha Giang?

Being a mountainous province, Ha Giang experiences notably cooler temperatures compared to the adjacent plains and midlands. Its average annual temperature hovers around 21-23 degrees Celsius.

From January to March, the ethnic minorities of Ha Giang celebrate various spring festivals while peach and plum blossoms adorn the region with their vibrant colors and fragrant scents. However, it's important to note that in January and February, temperatures can drop to 10-15 degrees Celsius before gradually rising in March with the return of the sun.

In the sunny month of April, the Khau Vai love market takes place in Meo Vac. Here, former lovers, separated for various reasons, gather in traditional costumes representing their ethnic groups to rekindle their deepest feelings.

May marks the beginning of the water season, during which the vast rice terraces, nourished by rainwater, resemble enormous mirrors. It's a unique and original experience to witness the transplanting of rice in these fields.

Between June and August, Ha Giang's landscapes become magnificent with the rice terraces of Hoang Su Phi and the panoramas of the Dong Van plateau, Meo Vac, and the Ma Pi Leng pass. However, this period corresponds to the rainy season, which exposes the region to the risk of flooding. Additionally, these are also the hottest months of the year, with temperatures reaching 29 to 32 degrees Celsius.

September and October transform ethnic villages into a golden spectacle, symbolizing the abundance and prosperity of ripe rice fields. It's the ideal time to experience emotionally rich moments, surrounded by the golden hues of rice and the captivating aroma of the fields. These landscapes are truly magnificent and spectacular.

As the year draws to a close, from November to December, Ha Giang, while experiencing colder temperatures (with a risk of snow in Dong Van at the end of December), delights nature-loving visitors with its buckwheat and mustard fields. These two magnificent flowers paint the hilly valleys of Ha Giang in vibrant colors.

3. How to get to Ha Giang?

  • Hanoi - Ha Giang

Ha Giang is 320 km north of Hanoi, and the journey from Hanoi to Ha Giang can be completed by bus, motorbike, or private car. However, this journey is quite long, requiring between 6 and 7 hours of driving. Several bus companies offer the Hanoi-Ha Giang route from different bus stations, including My Dinh, Giap Bat, Gia Lam, or the old quarter in the center of Hanoi.

The best way to reach Ha Giang is by bus or private car, as driving a motorbike in Vietnam, especially in the mountains, is not easy and can be quite dangerous for foreigners.

Tips: Unless you have no other choice of transportation (~$20), avoid the standard sleeper coaches because it’s meant to fit the way smaller body types of Vietnamese people and opt for far more comfy VIP vans or luxurious sleeper coaches with big-size private cabin which cost you no more than $25USD.
