Yes. You can begin in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap and end in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or run the route the other way round. Because the trips are private there are no fixed departures, so the direction is usually decided by which flights suit you best.

Yes. Both countries border the region and can be added by air or overland, from Cambodia or from Vietnam. Allow at least five to seven extra days: less than that and the new country becomes a stopover rather than a proper part of the trip.

October to April is the most reliable window for a trip covering both countries. Vietnam runs 2,000 km from north to south and the regions do not share a season, so there is rarely a month when everywhere is at its best: October to November and mid-March to May are usually the most comfortable overall. Cambodia has a clearer pattern, with a dry season from mid-October to April. Its climate is close to that of southern Vietnam, so a trip planned around Cambodia's dry season normally suits the south of Vietnam as well. July and August are hot, around 30 to 35 degrees, but Ha Long Bay is often sunny and the rice terraces in the north are green.

There are three ways and we use all of them depending on the itinerary. Flying is the quickest: about an hour from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. The most interesting option is by river, taking a boat up the Mekong from the far south of Vietnam to Phnom Penh, which turns the border crossing into part of the trip. Travelling overland is possible but the drives are long, so we usually suggest it only when it fits the rest of the route.

Fifteen days is the length that covers both countries without rushing: roughly ten to eleven days in Vietnam from north to south, then three or four for Phnom Penh and the Angkor temples. Ten days works if you concentrate on southern Vietnam, the Mekong Delta and Cambodia rather than trying to include Hanoi and Ha Long Bay. With an extra week you can add the northern mountains of Vietnam or a few nights on the coast at either end.

The two countries have different rules, so check both.

• For Vietnam, citizens of the United Kingdom and of most western European countries currently enter without a visa for stays of up to 45 days. Citizens of the United States and Australia are not on the exemption list and need an e-visa, which is issued online by the Vietnamese immigration authorities and allows up to 90 days with multiple entries.
• For Cambodia, all of these nationalities need a visa: either a visa on arrival, currently 30 USD for a 30-day stay, or an e-visa applied for in advance at the official site evisa.gov.kh. Separately from the visa, every traveller entering Cambodia must also submit the free e-Arrival card at arrival.gov.kh within seven days before arrival.

The dry season from mid-October to April is ideal for visiting Cambodia due to its mild weather, clear blue skies, and minimal rainfall. From May to September, although it is the rainy season, the rain typically lasts only one or two hours per day. The rest of the day is sunny, making sightseeing still possible.

• Embassy: You’re welcome to obtain it in advance for $30–$35 USD, offering a 30-day stay.
• e-Arrival Card: Please submit this free form online at www.arrival.gov.kh within 7 days before flying into major airports.

Yes, it is absolutely possible to reach Cambodia by air. You can take a flight from Ho Chi Minh City (or Hanoi) to Siem Reap and dedicate the rest of your trip to exploring the magnificent Angkorian temples.

Yes, Thailand and Laos share borders with Cambodia and Vietnam. It is possible to add Laos or Thailand to your trip, but you will need to extend your journey by at least 5-7 days. You can travel from Cambodia to Laos or Thailand by land or by air. The same applies for traveling from Vietnam to Laos.
