For the first time ever, the famous Hang Dau Water Castle built during the colonial era is opening its doors to the public from November 17th to December 31st, as part of the Hanoi 2023 Creative Design Festival.
The Hang Dau Water Castle, also known as the Hang Dau stand or circular water plant, is a historic monument of Hanoi. It is located at the intersection of six streets: Hang Than, Hang Luoc, Hang Giay, Hang Dau, Quan Thanh and Phan Dinh Phung, in Ba Dinh district.

Built in 1894, along with the Yen Phu water plant, the Hang Dau Water Castle is an old architectural work of Hanoi created by the French to provide drinking water to their soldiers and citizens during the French colonial period in Hanoi.
The Hang Dau Water Castle stopped operating in 1960 and was forgotten for a long time, even though the underground pipeline under the tower is still part of the city's water transportation system.
After years of neglect, the Hang Dau Water Castle has been restored to life thanks to renovation by architects and experts. For the first time, this historic remnant welcomes visitors on the occasion of the Hanoi 2023 Creative Design Festival, held from November 17th to December 31st.
The exhibition space of the stand features a sound installation system that reproduces the sounds of water in nature; a lighting installation with images highlighting the impact of urban areas on the natural environment. The authors wish to convey to the public the important role of water in life as well as the link between man and nature.
The Hang Dau Water Castle is not the only historic monument in Hanoi to experience a second youth during this arts festival. Other iconic sites of the Vietnamese capital will also host art and architecture exhibitions. This includes Long Bien Bridge, Gia Lam Railway Factory and Hanoi and Long Bien train stations.
This initiative reveals new possibilities for enhancing Hanoi’s heritage. It demonstrates that these witnesses of the past can become living cultural spaces. An original way to explore the architectural history of the city while discovering contemporary art.
