The Stunning Beauty of the Hon Khoi Salt Fields
Spanning hundreds of hectares, the Hon Khoi salt fields, located in Ninh Hoa city, attract visitors with the beauty of the work set in a natural environment. The picturesque landscape, combined with the hardworking salt workers, offers a unique and authentic glimpse into the region's agricultural traditions.
Hon Khoi belongs to Ninh Hoa city in Khanh Hoa province, about 45 km from Nha Trang. Covering an area of approximately 400 hectares, it is considered one of the largest salt fields in Vietnam. The intense activity of the salt workers (those who harvest the salt) begins at dawn and ends at sunset.
In the morning, seawater is directed to the salt fields. Under the scorching sun, the salt workers rake the salt into small mounds to let it dry. At dusk, they carry the salt on their shoulders to take it to the processing centers.
Salt production is heavily dependent on weather conditions: the sunnier it is, the more abundant the harvest. On the other hand, a sudden rain can ruin a whole day’s work if the salt has not yet reached the required level of dryness.
The salt season lasts from about April to July. In particular, the months of April and June, when the hot winds from the south blow and the sun becomes fiercer, are the ideal times to collect large, pure white salt crystals with a strong flavor.
The image of salt workers wearing conical hats, carrying baskets of sparkling white salt, reflected in the shimmering waters of the salt fields, offers a harmonious tableau of man and nature, capturing the timeless rhythm of labor and the beauty of the landscape, where human effort and natural elements are intricately intertwined.
The salt fields resemble a vast mirror, reflecting the sky and clouds, creating a stunning and serene landscape that feels almost magical, where the shimmering waters seem to stretch endlessly, blending seamlessly with the horizon, evoking a sense of peace and awe.
Under the light of dawn or at sunset, the salt fields transform into a picturesque landscape, both peaceful and authentic. To capture the most beautiful photos, visitors can head to Hon Khoi early in the morning and admire the bustling work of the salt workers under the golden light of sunrise.
Although it may not be a famous tourist destination in Vietnam, if you're planning a trip to Nha Trang, make sure to take some time to visit the Hon Khoi salt fields to learn more about the culture and the lives of the local people here.
