Centuries-old, rusty train carriages in Thailand have been skillfully transformed into one-of-a-kind, opulent accommodations designed by internationally acclaimed architect Bill Bensley, offering guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the evocative ambiance of a bygone era.
Railways and train carriages have long been a major attraction for tourists. Traveling by train allows passengers to slowly traverse various landscapes, making it easy to enjoy and capture beautiful sceneries in photos or videos. Besides the well-maintained railways still in operation, many old train carriages have been decommissioned due to their inability to meet contemporary operational standards.
In Thailand, a train that was put into service in the early 20th century has now been transformed into something entirely different. It has been converted into a resort and hotel, offering a unique experience for visitors.
This resort and hotel, known as the InterContinental Khao Yai, is situated in proximity to Khao Yai National Park, about a 2.5-hour drive from downtown Bangkok. Although it has been renovated for commercial purposes, the designers have strived to incorporate the historical and cultural essence of Thailand's railways.
According to CNN, the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort features 65 suites and villas. The outdoor area includes a covered swimming pool, with some rooms offering outdoor bathtubs.
Upon entering the reception hall, guests will feel as though they have stepped into an old Thai railway station. The space is decorated with vintage luggage trunks, wooden benches, old train parts, and illustrated historical pictures and photographs adorning the walls.
In addition to the luxurious rooms, the repurposed train carriages at the resort also house a spa, a kids' club, and three dining venues: Poirot, Papillon, and Tea Carriage.
The first restaurant, Poirot, was established. This French-style restaurant offers views of the nearby Swan Lake.
Next is Papillon, located right next to Poirot. It is a jazz-themed bar serving strong cocktails and hosting live music performances every weekend. Lastly, Tea Carriage is situated further away but offers stunning views. Visitors can enjoy a variety of beverages, such as coffee and tea, perfect for a lovely afternoon.
The resort also features Somying's Kitchen, a dedicated dining area. Its design is reminiscent of street food carts commonly found in Thailand, with bright blue and white interiors. Outside the restaurant, there is a small pool and the Terminus Bar, a cozy bar with traditional Thai railway motifs.
Returning to the detailed design of each room at this resort, every space maximizes the use of elements from classic train carriages, featuring window compartments and wall art resembling station signs and numbers.
In addition to double rooms, there are interconnected suites with bunk beds for larger groups, as well as rooms with balconies overlooking the lake and private plunge pools.
The 19-hectare resort is home to over 30,000 trees and numerous lakes, creating a harmonious natural setting for guests. Among the lakes, Swan Lake is notable for hosting flocks of black and white swans, giving the lake its name.

Guests can not only enjoy the unique design of the rooms but also take leisurely walks or bike rides around the resort. Bicycles are available for free, along with other amenities.
