The Lively Fishing Village in Phu Yen

The Lively Fishing Village in Phu Yen

The fishing village is one of the traditional cultural features of the coastal people in Vietnam. These villages have been home to local communities for generations, with fishing being both a livelihood and a cultural tradition. Today, they are not only homes for the locals but also popular tourist destinations.

Through the lens of Thảo Quyên, a Vietnamese photographer, we get to see the hardworking beauty of the people in a local fishing village in Phu Yen. Her images capture the daily life of fishermen and their families, showcasing the connection between the villagers and the sea. The photos reveal a simple yet resilient lifestyle, making these fishing villages a fascinating part of Vietnam's cultural heritage.

Starting early in the morning, the locals gather by the beach to collect fish from the fishing boats that have returned after a night of offshore fishing.

After a night at sea, the large boats bring back a large amount of fish, which are then divided into smaller baskets and brought ashore by the small round boats.

The fishermen are bringing the fish ashore. Although the work is very hard, it is the main source of income for the local people.

The image shows locals arranging baskets of fish to bring to buyers, creating a lively and colorful scene on the beach. These activities are not only part of their daily routine but also an essential aspect of the coastal fishing village culture.

A large number of fish are divided into smaller baskets. This amount of fish can be worth tens of millions of VND for each fishing trip.

Before being delivered to the customers, the locals spend a lot of time sorting the fish. Any fish that isn’t good to eat is thrown away. This careful process helps make sure only the best fish are sold.

These local women are calculating the number of fish before taking them to the market to sell.

A unique feature of fishing villages and fish markets is haggling! It’s a lively part of the experience, where both sellers and buyers enjoy negotiating for the best prices.

In these fishing villages, it’s not just the men who are involved in fishing and selling, but also the women, who play an equally important role in the daily activities of catching and trading fish, contributing to the community's livelihood and success.

After everything is done, the market vendors take the fish to the market to sell in the early morning. The busy market quickly fills with buyers eager to get the fresh catch of the day.

An impressive image captured by the author from above, showing the giant fishing net being spread out. The sight of the vast net unfolding against the sea is truly mesmerizing.

You might want to consider spending some time in the fishing villages when you visit Vietnam to better experience the lifestyle and culture of the local coastal communities.
