✍️ Advice: From the bus stop, the city center is quite far away, which is why it is often necessary to take a tuk-tuk, especially if you have luggage. Tuk-tuk drivers are well aware of this. So, if you are traveling independently without going through a travel agency, it is advisable to show your negotiating skills or share a tuk-tuk with others to get a cheaper rate.

Things to do in Nong Khiaw?

Viewpoints in Nong Khiaw

Nong Khiaw is a true paradise for outdoor activity lovers. Surrounded by limestone cliffs and intersected by the Nam Ou River, this small town in northern Laos offers the perfect setting to stay active while immersing yourself in the breathtaking scenery. Activities such as hiking, kayaking, biking, and cave exploration abound, each seemingly designed to help visitors escape the stresses of urban life. The town is encircled by spectacular mountain ranges, all of which provide stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Listed below are four viewpoints accessible from Nong Khiaw, with details on distance, altitude, and difficulty level.

  • Som Nang's Perspective

The Som Nang viewpoint is easily accessible, with only 20 minutes of ascent and about 15 minutes of descent. The trails are well maintained, making the walk enjoyable and without too much difficulty. Upstairs, you'll find restrooms available, but it may be prudent to bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

  • Nang None Lookout - The Sleeping Lady

This view is from a higher altitude than Som Nang Viewpoint, and the path is even more challenging since it is steeper. But once you overcome these hurdles, the view you will see is the greatest reward for a true adventurer.

But in order to get to this stage, one has to cross over many areas where there is a need to climb and very few ropes to help. This route is not recommended during bad weather. The weather and your own physical condition must be taken into account before you set off.

  • Trail to Pha Daeng Viewpoint, the Red Ridge of Nong Khiaw

Pha Daeng Lookout is located in Li District, Lamphun Province, and is included in Mae Ping National Park. Watch the sunrise over mountains and rivers reflecting off the water from the lookout point. The meandering river through the gorges makes it a spectacular landscape, like a painting done by Nature. The weather is cool with an atmosphere that adds to your happiness and serenity.

  • The viewpoints of Pha Noi and Pha Khao

The hike starting from the center of Muang Ngoi Neua takes about one and a half hours round trip. First, you need to follow a small path that passes through a garden and leads to a section constructed by the villagers. Afterward, a strenuous climb of about 30 minutes awaits, which is best avoided during rainy weather. Wooden and bamboo stairs help make the ascent manageable, allowing you to climb at your own pace. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning scenery. It's essential to carry water, as the weather can be very hot and there is no shade along the route. The descent is not as challenging and takes you through the forest and coffee estates, eventually bringing you back to the village on the same track.

Visitors especially enjoy crossing this bridge. It is the perfect place for a beautiful panoramic view of the mountains and the river.

Discovery of the Pha Kuang Caves

About 3 kilometers from the center of Nong Khiaw lies the historical and natural gem, Pha Kuang Cave. Situated just off the main road linking the Mandala Ou resort to the village of Pak Bak, the cave served as a shelter during the Indochina War in the 1960s. Step inside, and you will discover remnants of this unforgettable period.

A visit to Pha Kuang Cave offers an intriguing and unexpected adventure. To reach the large chambers inside, visitors must navigate narrow tunnels and slender passageways. Along these paths, you'll encounter impressive limestone formations, including stalactites and stalagmites, which resemble curtains, pillars, and even faces of witches.

What makes this cave particularly unique is its preservation, free of modern enhancements like stairs or sophisticated lighting. For an entrance fee of 10,000 kips, you can borrow a lantern from the restaurant across the street, owned by the cave's proprietor. An adventure highly recommended for those in good physical condition!

Boat or kayak ride on the Nam Ou River

A cruise provides the best conditions to discover the remote ethnic villages of the Nong Khiaw region. The authenticity and untouched character of its surroundings are granted to visitors leaving behind the noisy urban metropolises as a gift. The Nam Ou River stretches sinuously through idyllic sceneries, making one feel like living in a masterpiece of art.

Kayaking on the Nam Ou River
Kayaking on the Nam Ou River

These villages, surrounded by forest, could only be accessed by boat. Tourists will find friendly locals who will allow a peep into their simple way of life. There is also the chance to go kayaking and rafting on the river flowing downstream from Mang Khua.

Visit local villages

This is a perfect opportunity to experience the laid-back lifestyle typical of rural Laos. Within the village of Ban Had Sao, there are children ready to greet the visitors. Even though they might ask for candy or money, their generosity and hospitality create a special connection. One can also continue to the village of Sop Vanh which is particularly quiet with small shopping stores and an old Buddhist temple that reflects the culture of Laos.

🛵 Rent a motorcycle in Nong Khiaw

Renting a scooter in Nong Khiaw is easy and inexpensive, with numerous rental shops on both sides of the river. To rent, you will have to leave your passport and sign a strict rental agreement (do not damage the motorcycle!). You can rent the motorcycle for the whole day or half a day, depending on your preference.

✍️ Tips for renting a motorcycle:

  • The roads are not circular, so you will have to return the same way.
  • The roads in Laos are not smooth; They are full of potholes and obstacles like children and animals, so drive with caution.
  • When filling the tank, you don't do it yourself. Just pull over, open the tank, and tell the dispatcher how much money you want to spend on fuel. Many stores also sell fuel in Coca-Cola or alcoholic beverage bottles. Pay the amount you want and the store owner will help you fill the tank.

However, it is undeniable that for foreign tourists, renting a motorcycle can take a lot of research time. The need for an International Driver's Permit, coupled with a lack of knowledge of the roads and terrain, can be dangerous. If you want to explore this place in your own way, do not hesitate to contact us, a local travel agency, which guarantees you a trip adapted to your desires.

What is the best time to visit?

The dry season, from November to April, is by far the best time to visit Nong Khiaw. Climatic conditions are just dry and sunny during this period, thus perfect for activities like hiking, kayaking, or biking. The scenery would be at its best with absolutely perfect views of both mountains and Nam Ou River. This season is recommended for those who wish to tour and enhance the beauty of nature in the regions.

Rainy season (May to October): This is the season that you can skip. The rain can be all over the trails, which makes outdoor activities relatively complicated, though the rain makes vegetation green and the landscape very beautiful. One just needs to be prepared for the wet.

Tranquil scenery in Nong Khiaw
Tranquil scenery in Nong Khiaw

The lowest temperatures during the year, in December and January, can improve the hiking experience, especially in mountainous areas. The cooler climate makes this time of year an ideal time to visit Nong Khiaw for those that prefer milder weather conditions.

Hottest months (March to June): It's the hottest time of the year, with temperatures quite high. If you are heat-sensitive, it will be worth considering reserving your activities for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the sweltering heat.

💡 Practical fact: Rire season (March-April): During this time, the inhabitants practice rice farming by burning the fields, which creates an atmosphere of smoke in the air. If you like unique experiences and the smoke haze doesn't bother you, it's an interesting time to visit. However, if you prefer clearer landscapes for your photos and visits, it's best to avoid these months.

How many days does it take to explore Nong Khiaw?

There is no answer to this, like "How long does it take to hunt a hare?". Your stay in Nong Khiaw depends on what you want to do. Just 4 hours from Luang Prabang and easily accessible, you could just spend a couple of days doing a hike to the viewpoint and a kayak tour around Nong Khiaw.

More time allows for longer stays. Some decided to stay for up to two weeks. This may sound like a long time to some, but to do all the hiking trails to different viewpoints, explore the caves, take multi-day hikes, and take boat rides to nearby villages requires more than a week.

If you want to focus on one-day stuff and don't mind being worn out, you can do a lot in three or four days.
