1. History of Rail Transport in Laos

Laos historically lacked substantial railway infrastructure due to its mountainous geography. During the French colonial period, the Don Det–Don Khon narrow gauge railway was constructed to navigate around the Khone Falls on the Mekong River. This railway was abandoned in the 1940s, though some remnants still exist.

Rail transport began to gain importance in Laos with the 2009 opening of the railway link from Vientiane to Thailand, followed by the 2021 launch of the Boten–Vientiane railway.

  • Metre-Gauge Line (2009): This line runs from Nong Khai in Thailand to Thanaleng in Laos and was extended to a new station in Vientiane in 2024. A direct Bangkok-Vientiane sleeper train commenced on July 19, 2024.
  • Laos-China Railway (2021): A standard-gauge railway linking Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and the Chinese border, with onward connections to/from Kunming, China.

2. Major Train Stations in Laos

2.1 Vientiane Railway Station

The Vientiane train station is located 15 km northeast of the city center and opened on December 3, 2021. Although the station only opens an hour before each departure, it is well-equipped with a restaurant, convenience stores, and free filtered water. You should arrive early to avoid any last-minute rush.

2.2 Luang Prabang Railway Station

The Luang Prabang Railway Station is situated approximately 12 kilometers from the city center. The journey to the station takes about 30 minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk. I used to pay 100,000 kip (€5.49/$5.83) for a tuk-tuk ride from the city center, which covered the fare for two people.

The station offers several basic amenities, including sit or squat toilets, a ticket counter, a resting area for mothers with babies, and a few hot water stations. There is an Amazon Cafe and two small supermarkets.

2.3 Vang Vieng Train Station

Vang Vieng Station, a recent addition to Laos' railway network, is located a few kilometers from the town center. It's best reached by taxi or tuk-tuk. The station features basic facilities, including ticket counters, a waiting area with limited amenities, and minimal food and drink options, so bringing your own supplies is advisable.

2.4 Boten Train Station

Boten Train Station, situated near the Laos-China border, is a crucial link between Laos and China. Located close to Boten town, it offers basic facilities including ticket counters and a waiting area with limited amenities. Food and drink options are sparse, so it's wise to bring your own. The station connects to key destinations on the Laos-China Railway, including Vientiane and Kunming, with varying schedules.

3. Where to Buy Tickets and Prices

3.1 Where to buy tickets

  • Option 1: Tickets can be purchased in advance either online or at the station. The railway station ticket offices are open around train arrival and departure times. Advance tickets can be purchased up to 3 days before departure, with payment required in cash.
    • Passenger identification must be shown when purchasing tickets, and names will be printed on them.
    • Passengers must keep their tickets throughout the journey and present them upon exiting the arrival station to avoid fines.
    • Tickets can be bought for others with a copy of their ID.

  • Option 2: Non-railway ticket offices are located in central Luang Prabang (near the Vietnamese Embassy) and on the ground floor of Vientiane Center. They are open from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon and 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm daily (hours may vary). A maximum of 2 tickets can be purchased per person with valid ID and a COVID-19 vaccination certificate. Payment is only accepted via UnionPay card or QR code (OnePay, UnionPay, Alipay, and WeChat).

Cash is not accepted. Tourists often need a local with a Lao bank account to pay. A service fee of 20,000 kip per ticket applies.

  • Option 3: Ask your hotel or guesthouse to book your train tickets - it's often the easiest and most convenient method! Provide them with a second-choice train in case your first preference is fully booked. Note that they can only book tickets two days in advance. Given the current ticketing process of the LCR, this method is not only simpler but also more cost-effective than paying for a round-trip taxi to the station.

3.2 Prices

Tickets must be shown upon exiting the destination station to avoid a fine. Arrive at least two hours before departure if you need to purchase a ticket, as there are multiple queues and security checks.

Main railway station interiors are open briefly before and after scheduled departures, with no available toilets, food, drinks, or seats outside the stations. Outside toilets are available for a small fee since October 2022. Limited beverages and snacks are sold onboard.

For my journey from Luang Prabang, I chose a First Class ticket and opted for Business Class on my return trip. The total cost was $69, and I conveniently purchased the tickets using the LCR Ticket app with my Visa card. You can download the app here: App Store & GooglePlay  Once booked, tickets or QR code tickets will be sent to your email within 3-4 days before departure. If you do not receive your QR ticket within this timeframe, be sure to follow up with the booking service

Note:

Before boarding the Laos-China Railway, passengers must go through security screening procedures similar to those at airports.

Upon arrival at the station, you'll need to present your tickets and passports before being directed to the security screening area. Here, all bags are scanned with an X-ray machine, and each passenger is scanned with a hand wand. The ticket will list prohibited items, including weapons, explosives, chemicals, drugs, sharp objects, and animals (both alive and dead).

Additionally, food with strong odors or liquid consistency, as well as liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs), are not allowed.

While bottled water is typically confiscated, small quantities (100ml or less) in standard airline carry-on plastic bags have generally not caused issues for some passengers. Being aware of these rules will help ensure a smooth boarding process.

4. Train Experience

Traveling in Business Class on this train offers a luxurious experience with access to an exclusive VIP waiting room at the station. This room provides a quiet escape from the busy main hall, featuring comfortable seating and a fridge stocked with bottled water, along with priority boarding through a dedicated entrance.

In my opinion, The Laos-China Railway offers a convenient and comfortable travel option between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. While there are some challenges with ticket purchasing, the journey itself is a testament to the developing infrastructure in Laos. The stunning scenery and efficient service make it a worthwhile experience. If you’re traveling in Laos, this train ride is highly recommended for its convenience and the unique perspective it offers on the country’s landscape.

Amenities and Services:

  • Facilities: Trains are equipped with clean, western-style toilets, wash basins, and filtered water dispensers. There’s also a catering car, though options may be limited.
  • Service Improvements: Currently, the service includes only a small bottle of water. Introducing welcome drinks, coffee, and snacks could enhance the experience. Additionally, increased attention to cleanliness between passengers, such as providing fresh slippers and a quick tidy-up, would improve the overall luxury feel.
  • Seat Arrangement Concern: Seats are angled slightly towards the left, which is ideal for passengers on that side but may be less convenient for those on the right.

6. Additional Tips

  1. Buy Tickets Early: Purchasing tickets early from operators doesn't provide an advantage. LCR tickets are only available three days before the ride, regardless of when you buy from operators. Consider this to avoid unnecessary fees if your plans change.
  2. Arrive Early: Reach the train station early to allow time for security checks.
  3. Digital Tickets: Save your digital tickets on your phone and ensure it stays charged, as you'll need to show them multiple times.
  4. Ticket Changes and Refunds: Know the terms if buying from operators. If using the LCR app, you can change the ticket up to 30 minutes before departure for a fee of at least 3,000 kip.
  5. No WIFI: There is no WIFI on the train, and data coverage is intermittent.
  6. Food and Drinks: Train attendants offer food and drinks from a trolley during the journey.
