How to explore Cat Ba National Park like a true local (2026)
If you ask me where to go in northern Vietnam for both jungle and sea, I will say Cat Ba National Park without hesitation.
Here, you can hike through real tropical forest in the morning, stand on top of limestone peaks like Ngu Lam, explore caves formed thousands of years ago, and truly feel the raw, living energy of the forest inside the park.
As a local guide, I like Cat Ba because it still feels balanced. And here is something many people do not realize. Right inside the national park, there is a small village called Viet Hai where you can experience authentic local life, far from the busy town and tour groups.
In this guide, I will walk you through how to get to Cat Ba National Park, the best hiking routes, ticket prices, where to stay, and how to plan one or two days properly.

Cat Ba National Park in northern Vietnam is a 17,360-hectare biosphere reserve on Cat Ba Island, about 150 km from Hanoi, with limestone mountains, tropical rainforest, caves, and quiet villages. It is ideal if you want both jungle trekking and easy access to Lan Ha Bay’s calm sea, with classic one- or two-day routes to Ngu Lam Peak, Frog Pond, and Viet Hai Village.
Entrance fee: around 80,000–160,000 VND per adult (2026).
Best time to visit: March–May and October–November.
A guide is not required for main trails but helpful for longer routes and deeper ecological insights.
Where is Cat Ba National Park?
Geographically, Cat Ba National Park is located about 150 km southeast of Hanoi and approximately 14 km northeast of Cat Ba Town. It sits within the Cat Ba Archipelago, making it easily accessible by motorbike, taxi, or guided tour from the town center.
This protected area was established in 1986 on Cat Ba Island, in Cat Hai District, Hai Phong City, northeastern Vietnam.
Why visit Cat Ba National Park?
If you are looking for a place where you can experience deep jungle, authentic local life, and still be close to the sea, Cat Ba National Park is a rare combination.
Cat Ba National Park forms the core of the UNESCO-recognized Cat Ba World Biosphere Reserve and is known for its limestone karst mountains, tropical rainforest, cave systems, and the critically endangered Cat Ba langur.
We organize a yearly scouting trip to explore and assess trekking route
Within one compact area, you can trek through dense tropical forest, climb limestone peaks for panoramic views, and walk into Viet Hai Village, a small community hidden inside the park where daily life still moves at a slow, local rhythm.
At the same time, you are only a short boat ride away from Lan Ha Bay, with calm emerald water and limestone islands. Few places in northern Vietnam allow you to move so naturally from rainforest to village to sea in just one or two days.
If you love the beach, Lan Ha Bay has several small, beautiful beaches that are perfect for swimming
Wildlife & Biodiversity
The park is home to 1,585 plant species, including valuable hardwoods such as Nageia fleuryi, ironwood, and rosewood. While tropical evergreen rainforest dominates, you’ll also find limestone mountain forests, coastal mangroves, and freshwater swamp forests like Frog Pond (Ao Ech). More than 661 medicinal plants, 102 seaweed species, and hundreds of phytoplankton varieties have been recorded here. (Source: Cat Ba National Park Official Website)
More than 661 medicinal plants, 102 seaweed species, and hundreds of phytoplankton varieties have been recorded here.
Wildlife here is also impressive, with 53 mammals, 160 birds, 46 reptiles, and 21 amphibians. The park’s most iconic species is the critically endangered Cat Ba langur, found only on this island and listed on the IUCN Red List.

Compared to Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba National Park feels quieter and more authentic. Peaceful hiking trails, the traditional Viet Hai Village, jungle trekking, valley cycling, and kayaking in nearby Lan Ha Bay make it a perfect blend of adventure and local culture in one destination.
In 2025, the entrance fee to Cat Ba National Park is $6–$7 USD for adults and around $3 USD for children under 1.2 meters.

6.1 Ngu Lam Peak Trail
2 to 3 Hours
Length 2.9 km | Elevation gain 159 m
Ngu Lam Peak is usually my first recommendation for anyone visiting Cat Ba for a short time. I like this trail because it gives a real jungle experience without requiring a full day.
The hike starts near the entrance of Cat Ba National Park. The first section is shaded and relatively easy, with stone steps and a clear path. Higher up, the terrain becomes steeper and more rugged. The limestone rocks can be slippery after rain, so good shoes are important.

At the summit, there is a small observation tower with a wide 360 degree view over the limestone mountains. It is a manageable climb for most people with average fitness, especially if started early in the morning.

6.2 Frog Pond (Ao Ech) Trail Half Day
Around 4 hours
Length 5 km
If you tell me you want something more adventurous, I will suggest Frog Pond. This one is more challenging and feels much wilder.
The first few kilometers are moderate, but the second half involves climbing over large limestone boulders and navigating steeper, sometimes muddy sections. The humidity makes it more demanding than the distance suggests.
Frog Pond itself is a quiet freshwater lake hidden deep in the forest. Very few visitors reach this point, which makes it feel remote and peaceful. The route is marked clearly, but it requires decent fitness and some comfort with uneven terrain.

6.3 Viet Hai Village Trek Full Day
If you want both nature and local life, I recommend trekking to Viet Hai Village.
You start from the park entrance and slowly move from the road into the forest. The trail is clear and mostly uphill and downhill. You will walk over tree roots and natural ground, nothing technical, but steady.
Near the end, there is a cave before descending into Viet Hai Village. The village sits in a quiet valley and has more than a century of history.
If you want both nature and local life, I recommend trekking to Viet Hai Village!
This is one of my favorite routes because it shows both the natural landscape and the human side of the island. Most hikers spend four to five hours walking, then return by boat from the village harbor.
An overnight stay in Viet Hai feels very different from Cat Ba Town. Evenings are quiet, meals are home cooked, and the atmosphere is simple. It is basic but authentic.
Seafood in Viet Hai Village is fresh, authentic, and absolutely delicious.
6.4 Navy Peak
3 to 4 Hours
Length 2.4 km
Navy Peak is slightly higher and usually less crowded than Ngu Lam. The trail passes through dense forest and includes some steeper rocky sections. It feels a bit more remote.
At the top, the view opens toward Lan Ha Bay and the surrounding karst formations. On a clear day, the contrast between jungle and sea is impressive. It is a good option for those who want something similar to Ngu Lam but quieter.

6.5 Kim Giao Forest – Trung Trang Cave
Length 1.1 km
30 minutes
This is an easy and short walk inside Cat Ba National Park, and I often recommend it when there is limited time.
The path through Kim Giao Forest is paved and gentle, followed by wooden steps leading to Trung Trang Cave. Inside, the 300 metre long cave has uneven and sometimes slippery rock floors, with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. In a few sections, you need to bend slightly to pass through narrow spaces.

The cave is also home to bats and linked to local legends about Lady Trung Trang. Before entering, there is a small viewpoint overlooking the forest.
Do You Need a Guide for Cat Ba Trekking?
Actually, you don’t have to hire a guide if you’re sticking to popular routes and feel confident navigating on your own.
But a guide is helpful if you:
Want to explore deeper trails safely
Prefer someone who knows weather and trail conditions
Are curious about wildlife like the rare Cat Ba langur
Want to visit places like Viet Hai Village without worrying about language barriers
Cat Ba National Park is wild, humid, and very different from a city park. Trails can be steep, muddy, and sometimes unclear, especially after rain.
In short: independent hiking is possible, but a guide makes the experience smoother, safer, and more insightful.
Your trip will be much smoother with a local guide in Cat Ba National Park!
The rainy season usually runs from June to September. Hiking is still possible, but preparation matters.
Start early to avoid afternoon storms
Wear shoes with strong grip
Bring a light rain jacket
Expect slippery limestone rocks
Most important: Watch for leeches in deep forest trails
The forest becomes very green and dramatic after rain, so it is not a bad time. It just requires more caution and flexibility.

Note: Even during peak season, trekking in Cat Ba National Park is rarely overcrowded. Most Vietnamese visitors come for the beaches, seafood, and boat tours rather than hiking deep into the forest. There is generally no need to avoid the high season, except during major national holidays.
Where to stay?
8.1 Lan Homestay
Address: Viet Hai Village, Cat Ba
Phone: 0363 934 325
If you decide to trek to Viet Hai and stay overnight, Lan Homestay is one of the most reliable options in the village. It sits right in the middle of the valley, surrounded by forest and limestone mountains. Very quiet at night.
From here, it is easy to organize cycling around the valley or boat transfers back to town.
8.2 Cat Ba Countryside Homestay
Address: Hai Son Village, Khe Sau, Cat Ba Island
Phone: 0987 141 245
This homestay is located near Hospital Cave and close to the national park, about 6 km from Cat Ba Town. It is quieter than staying in town but still accessible.
Rooms are clean, airy, and there is a swimming pool, which is very welcome after a hot hike. The setting is surrounded by greenery, so it feels more rural than coastal.
8.3 The Ancient House
Address: Viet Hai Village, Cat Ba Island
Phone: 0903 426 831
This is a very unique stay in Viet Hai. The stone house is simple, rustic, and peaceful. If the goal is to completely disconnect for a night, this is a good option.
It is a quiet retreat rather than a social place. Good choice after a full day trekking Navy Peak or walking from the park into the village.

This option gives a better balance between trekking, village life, and coastal scenery.

Conclusion
If you are looking for a place that offers both sea and forest, Cat Ba is honestly a great choice. Few destinations in northern Vietnam give you limestone islands, quiet beaches, and real jungle trekking in the same area.
Interestingly, Cat Ba is still not as well known among international travelers as places like Ha Long Bay, even though it has long been a familiar getaway for Vietnamese visitors. That balance keeps it lively but not overwhelming.
If you decide to visit, please travel responsibly. Respect wildlife, especially protected species in the national park. Avoid littering, reduce plastic use, and stay on marked trails when hiking. Small actions help preserve Cat Ba’s forests, marine life, and local communities for the future.
