Cat Ba Island, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Gulf of Tonkin", is a stunning destination situated within the city of Hai Phong in northern Vietnam, approximately 150 km from central Hanoi.
Nestled in the midst of an exceptionally picturesque area, it is enveloped by over 300 sizable and petite islands in Lan Ha Bay, which forms an essential component of the Gulf of Tonkin. Intriguingly, Lan Ha Bay constitutes a segment of the globally renowned Halong Bay Complex. (Soure: Hai Phong City Official Government Portal)

2. Is Cat Ba and Halong Bay the same? Is it safe?
No, they’re not the same, but they’re closely connected.
Both are located in the Gulf of Tonkin, both are part of the UNESCO World Heritage area, and both feature stunning limestone karsts and emerald waters.
The difference?
Ha Long Bay is more famous and often more crowded.
Cat Ba Island, located in Lan Ha Bay, offers similar scenery with a quieter, more local atmosphere.
Plus, over one-third of the island is protected by Cat Ba National Park, making it perfect for nature lovers.
Is it safe? Yes. Cat Ba is very safe for travelers, with friendly locals and well-developed tourism services. Basic travel awareness is all you need.

3. What to do on Cat Ba Island
Enjoy a leisurely stroll along Cat Ba Town's Seafront
Start at the harbor and walk along the waterfront. You’ll see colorful fishing boats, floating seafood restaurants, and the limestone karsts of Lan Ha Bay stretching across the horizon. It’s the best way to feel the local coastal vibe.
Then head into Cat Ba Market to see daily life and local products. When you’re hungry, pick a seaside restaurant and enjoy fresh seafood. In the afternoon, go up to Cannon Fort for a panoramic view of the bay. Stay for sunset if you can as it’s one of the best views on the island.

Indulge in relaxation on pristine sandy beaches
If you need a slow moment, head to the Cat Co beaches. These three small sandy beaches are just a 10–15 minute walk from Cat Ba Town, or you can take a short electric shuttle ride.
Here, you can stretch out on the soft sand, swim in calm waters, and enjoy the view of limestone karsts rising from the sea. It’s the perfect way to recharge after a day of hiking or exploring the island.

Hike through Cat Ba National Park
Over half of Cat Ba Island is protected as Cat Ba National Park, recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve since 2005. If you enjoy nature, this is a must-do.
The park is home to rich wildlife, including rare birds and the endangered golden-headed langur. You’ll hike through dense tropical forest, limestone hills, hidden caves, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the island.
It’s the best way to experience the wild, untouched side of Cat Ba, far from the beach and town atmosphere.

Explore Viet Hai Village - The only village inside Cat Ba National Park
If you really want to experience Cat Ba beyond the usual route, cycle to Viet Hai Village, the only village inside Cat Ba National Park. Stay one night instead of returning to town.
In the evening, enjoy the quiet countryside, have a simple home-cooked meal, and sleep in a homestay surrounded by mountains and forest. Wake up early, rent a bicycle, and ride through the calm village roads while the morning air is still fresh and cool.
Note: Many of my guests choose this option when they do not want to join an overnight cruise. They prefer to spend the night in the village for a more peaceful and local experience.
Get on your bike and take small picturesque paths
Spending a day in a cruise in Lan Ha Bay
After exploring the island, a cruise in Lan Ha Bay is something you should not miss. You can choose a private or shared boat and spend the day sailing among limestone karsts rising from calm emerald waters.
Kayaking is the highlight. Paddle through quiet corners of the bay, pass under low caves, and enter hidden lagoons surrounded by cliffs and tropical greenery. It is the best way to see the landscape up close and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the bay.
Practice tai chi on a Lan Ha Bay cruise
Itineraries may vary among different cruise lines, but you can embark on kayak adventures to explore locations such as the Ca Tunnel and its magnificent Ba Ham Lake, as well as the picturesque tunnels of Vung Kiem Lam, Hang Ca, and many others. Discovering Lan Ha Bay by kayak promises an unforgettable travel experience.
Following a kayak excursion, it's delightful to take a swim in the middle of the bay or in one of the numerous coves nestled among the karst rocks of Lan Ha Bay, such as the Ba Trai Dao beaches.
Another must-do activity during your visit to Lan Ha Bay is a trip to the floating villages. Here, you'll relish the opportunity to discover this unique way of life, interact with the local fishing communities, and gain insights into their traditional fishing techniques and daily activities centered around the sea.

Discover millennia-old caves
Cruising in Lan Ha Bay also means exploring ancient limestone caves formed over thousands of years, filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
On Cat Ba Island, you can visit Trung Trang Cave and Hospital Cave, which was used as a secret military hospital during the Vietnam War.
Other highlights include Me Cung Cave, known for its hidden lake surrounded by cliffs, and Dark and Light Cave, a peaceful water cave often explored by kayak or bamboo boat.

Bioluminescent plankton in Cat Ba
As a local travel guide, I usually tell my guests this: if the weather is right, the plankton tour can be one of the most magical experiences.
Choose a dark, calm night. The less moonlight, the better. When you paddle, the water lights up around your kayak, sparkling with every movement. It feels quiet, almost surreal, especially when you are surrounded by limestone cliffs and open sky.
But timing is important. The glow depends on water conditions and weather. Tours may be canceled if conditions are not safe, and regulations about night kayaking can change.
If everything aligns, I recommend doing it. It is not guaranteed every evening, but when it works, it becomes a truly memorable moment of your trip to Cat Ba.
The bus is a good way to get to Hai Phong, the town connecting Cat Ba Island. Then you can take the canoe or ferry to Cat Ba Island. The journey takes approximately 3.5 hours from Hanoi and approximately 4.5 hours from Halong Bay on land. Otherwise, taking a private car with driver is one of the best choices to have the freedom to manage your time and move around with complete peace of mind.
From Ho Chi Minh City to Cat Ba:
If you are departing from Ho Chi Minh City or other cities in the central region such as Da Nang, Hue, etc., you have the option of taking a direct flight to Hai Phong city. Then you can get to the island by canoe or ferry.
