Koh Kong, the Other Cambodia Between Jungle and Wild Shores
Koh Kong, located in the southwest of Cambodia, on the border with Thailand, is a province that offers a beautiful combination of nature and tranquility. This preserved region is known for its beaches, tropical forests, and mountains. Koh Kong is the perfect place for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities and enjoy a calm and authentic atmosphere. Join me as we explore this area and discover why Koh Kong is an off-the-beaten-path destination.
1. Where is Koh Kong?
Koh Kong is located in the southwest of Cambodia, on the border with Thailand. It remains largely untouched by mass tourism, offering a complete escape into nature.
The province is a peaceful retreat, with pristine beaches, dense tropical forests, rich wildlife, and unique ecosystems like mangroves. Koh Kong’s coastline, still relatively unknown, stretches with long, white sandy beaches beside calm, clear waters – the perfect place to relax away from the crowds.

After about five hours on the bus from Phnom Penh, I finally arrived in Koh Kong. The nearly 300 km journey was a stark contrast to the city: empty roads, fresh air, and a rare sense of peace that immediately immersed me in the beauty of nature.

2. Koh Kong, a destination worth a trip?
Once there, the most convenient means of transportation remains the tuk-tuk. One of the most unique experiences was discovering Koh Kong by tuk-tuk, a popular means of transportation in Cambodia.
Sitting in this three-wheeled vehicle, with the wind blowing from both sides, crossing military zones near the Thai border, I had a pleasant experience, far from the crowded tourist spots of Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, where everything seems already explored.

Prices are very reasonable, often much lower than in other Cambodian cities.
For me, if someone asks whether Koh Kong is worth a visit, I’d say yes — as long as you've already discovered the must-see places like Siem Reap, and have a little time on your hands to venture to a more off-the-beaten-path destination. If you feel the need to relax, reconnect with nature, and end your trip in a peaceful setting, then Koh Kong is a very sensible choice.

However, if your trip to Cambodia is limited to this region, or if you're pressed for time, it's probably not the ideal option.
3. What to do and see?
🌳 Explore the Peam Krasop Mangrove Forest
- Characteristics: Peam Krasop is one of the largest nature reserves in Koh Kong, offering a great opportunity to explore unique ecosystems, home to a variety of wildlife.
- Activities: You can take boat trips along the mangrove canals, where you'll be able to spot birds, fish, and even crocodiles.
- Tip: Although the place is beautiful, don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent and prepare to cross a marshy area.

💦 Tatai Waterfall
- Features: The Tatai Waterfall, located in the western part of Koh Kong, is one of the most beautiful natural sites in the province.
- Activities: You can swim in the cool waters beneath the waterfall, take a boat trip along the Tatai River to appreciate the wild beauty of the area, or even try kayaking. It is possible to paddle on the Tatai River, with routes leading directly to the waterfall, offering a unique experience in the heart of nature.
- Tip: During the rainy season, water levels can rise, so it is recommended to check the weather conditions before your visit.

🏞️ Hiking in the Cardamom Mountains and Stargazing
- Cardamom Mountains: One of the least disturbed areas by humans in Cambodia, the Cardamom Mountains are home to exceptional wildlife and flora. Hiking through this pristine forest, you can spot rare animals such as wild elephants, tigers, and primates, while being awed by the spectacular mountain landscapes.
- Stargazing: The region is also famous for its clear skies, perfect for stargazing due to the absence of light pollution. However, hiking can be challenging, so if you're not used to walking through the forest, it is recommended to hire a local guide for a safer and more enriching experience.
- Tip: Due to the difficulty of the trekking, it is advisable to find a local guide. Learn more about the Cardamom Mountains.

🌾 Nesat Village
The village of Nesat, in Koh Kong province, is becoming more accessible thanks to a recently paved road. Surrounded by cashew nut orchards, it boasts a tranquil atmosphere, with mangrove-lined trails and docks where locals fish. A peaceful beach, a 10-15 minute tuk-tuk or motorbike ride away, offers an authentic natural setting.
The village also boasts lakeside resorts with wooden walkways, ideal for relaxing. Kayaking through dense vegetation is available, offering a unique and immersive experience.

🏝️ Visit Koh Rong – A must-see island
You can combine your trip to Koh Kong with the paradise island of Koh Rong, which can be reached in about a four-hour drive. The island is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, fine sandy beaches, and magnificent sunsets. It's an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, or hiking. Several accommodation options are available, ranging from simple bungalows to more luxurious resorts. This is the most beautiful island in Cambodia and should not be missed if you enjoy a beach holiday.
Tip: Check boat schedules before you leave, as the weather can affect the crossing.
4. The Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Koh Kong is from November to April, when the weather is cooler and rainfall is rare. During this period, the conditions are perfect for exploring natural landscapes, hiking, and enjoying the beaches.
Practical Tip: If you plan to travel during the high season (December to February), it’s a good idea to book your accommodations and transport in advance.
💡 Good to Know: Outside of this period, from May to October, Koh Kong experiences the rainy season. Although it is less touristy, this time can be ideal for those looking for a quieter and more lush environment.
Koh Kong is charming for its preserved nature, with mangroves, waterfalls, and more...
