Bangkok to Koh Samui: Flights, Train, Bus & Ferry Compared

1. How Do You Get from Bangkok to Koh Samui?

You can get from Bangkok to Koh Samui in four ways: a direct flight to Samui Airport, a flight to Surat Thani followed by a bus and ferry, an overnight train to Surat Thani with a bus and ferry, or a combined bus and ferry ticket from Bangkok. There is no ferry from Bangkok itself.

2. How Far Is Bangkok from Koh Samui?

Koh Samui is about 470 km (290 miles) from Bangkok in a straight line. Overland, the distance is longer: about 690 km by road from Bangkok to Donsak pier in Surat Thani province, plus a 38 km sea crossing, so around 725 km (450 miles) in total.

How Far Is Bangkok to Koh Samui by Plane?

By plane, Bangkok to Koh Samui is about 470 km (290 miles). A direct flight from Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang spends roughly 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes in the air, which makes it the quickest option even after check-in and the short transfer on the island.

3. Bangkok to Koh Samui by Plane

3.1 Direct Flights to Samui Airport

Bangkok Airways is the only airline flying direct from Bangkok to Koh Samui. Most flights leave from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), with a few from Don Mueang (DMK). In September 2026, departures from Suvarnabhumi ran from about 6 am to about 8 pm, and one-way fares were roughly 2,300 to 6,800 THB (about US$70 to 200), depending on the date and how early you book.

The direct flight usually costs more than flying to Surat Thani, mainly because nobody competes on it. Bangkok Airways built Samui Airport, which opened in 1989, and still operates it; Thai Airways stopped flying the route with its own aircraft in 2018, and no low-cost airline lands there. The fare does include 20 kg of checked baggage in economy.

My own reading of it: any rival airline would be paying airport fees to its competitor, so it is hard for them to undercut Bangkok Airways on price. I don't expect that to change soon, so I treat the direct flight as the premium option and only book it when time really matters.

3.2 Fly to Surat Thani, Then Bus and Ferry

Flying to Surat Thani (URT) on the mainland is usually cheaper than the direct flight. From Don Mueang, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air fly the route; from Suvarnabhumi, Thai Vietjet does. The flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, and AirAsia fares started at around 800 THB when we checked, with checked baggage sold separately.

At Surat Thani Airport, ferry companies (Lomprayah, Seatran, Raja and Phantip) sell combined bus and ferry tickets, at roughly 600 to 900 THB. The bus to Donsak pier covers about 90 km and takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, and the crossing takes another 1 to 1.5 hours. Plan on about 5 to 7 hours from Bangkok to your hotel.

So is it cheaper to fly to Surat Thani than direct to Samui? Usually yes: a low-cost flight plus a bus and ferry ticket can come to about 1,400 to 1,700 THB, against at least 2,300 THB for the direct flight. The trade-off is time, a heavier luggage bill if you check a bag, and a ferry crossing that depends on the weather.

This is the route I suggest to most friends who want to save money but still arrive the same day. I think of it as three blocks of roughly an hour and a half: the flight, the road to Donsak and the ferry. Take a morning flight and you have enough slack to catch a later boat if something runs late.

4. Bangkok to Koh Samui by Train and Ferry

No train goes all the way to Koh Samui. You take a train from Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal to Surat Thani station, which is actually in Phun Phin district, outside Surat Thani town. The ride takes about 9 to 11 hours, and a bus and ferry cover the last 4 to 5 hours to the island.

Long-distance trains no longer leave from Hua Lamphong: they moved to Krung Thep Aphiwat (the Bang Sue hub) in January 2023. About ten trains a day run to Surat Thani, departing between 7:30 am and 10:50 pm. The overnight trains below are the most practical, because they arrive in the morning when the bus and ferry connections are running.

A berth in a second-class air-conditioned sleeper costs about 1,000 to 1,100 THB, and first class about 1,570 to 1,670 THB. Buy through the State Railway of Thailand's D-Ticket website or at the station. At Surat Thani, bus and ferry companies meet the trains and run buses to Donsak from about 5:30 am, for roughly 490 to 850 THB. Earlier trains that arrive around 1 to 2 am leave you waiting for hours, which is why the evening departures work best.

5. Bangkok to Koh Samui by Bus and Ferry

A combined bus and ferry ticket is the cheapest way from Bangkok to Koh Samui, from about 619 THB, and the only one where a single ticket covers the whole trip. Expect 11.5 to 14.5 hours. There are two main options: Lomprayah from the Khao San area, and the government bus from the Southern Bus Terminal.

5.1 Lomprayah Bus and Catamaran from Khao San

Lomprayah runs a VIP bus from Rambuttri Road, near Khao San Road, and from Pinklao to Chumphon, where passengers change to a high-speed catamaran that calls at Koh Tao and Koh Phangan before reaching Maenam on Koh Samui. The morning bus leaves at 6:00 and arrives at about 17:30; evening buses leave between about 21:00 and 22:00 and arrive late the next morning. In September 2026, tickets cost about 1,250 to 1,450 THB. Check in one hour before departure.

5.2 Government Bus from the Southern Bus Terminal

The state-run Transport Co. (known as "999") runs evening buses from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) between about 17:00 and 18:35. The ticket, about 619 THB, includes the car ferry from Donsak, and the whole trip takes about 11.5 to 14.5 hours. Arrive at least 30 minutes early, and keep valuables in your seat rather than in the luggage hold.

5.3 How Long Is the Ferry Ride from Bangkok to Koh Samui?

There is no ferry from Bangkok itself. The crossing to Koh Samui starts at Donsak pier near Surat Thani and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours: around 1 hour by Lomprayah catamaran and 1.5 hours by the Raja or Seatran car ferries.

The Lomprayah boat from Chumphon takes longer, because it stops at Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Raja Ferry sails from Donsak to Lipa Noi pier from early morning to early evening, for about 210 THB per foot passenger. Seatran ferries go to Nathon, the island's main town. 6. What Is the Best Way to Get from Bangkok to Koh Samui?

The best way depends on your priorities. If time counts, fly direct and you can be on the beach by lunch. To save money without losing a full day, fly to Surat Thani and take the bus and ferry. If you enjoy slow travel or want to save a hotel night, take the overnight train.

If you are travelling as a group of four or more and would rather not fly, I would not default to the bus. A private minivan or a rental car driven straight through to Donsak is faster than any bus or train, the Raja car ferry takes vehicles across, and the cost is shared between you. Get a quote for your exact dates and compare it with four bus or train tickets before deciding.

7. What Is the Best Way to Get from Koh Samui to Bangkok?

The best way from Koh Samui to Bangkok is a direct Bangkok Airways flight, especially if you are connecting to an international flight, because most flights land at Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok's main international airport. For a cheaper trip, take a bus and ferry to Surat Thani, then fly from Surat Thani Airport or ride the night train.

If you are flying home the same day, do not rely on the ferry. Sea crossings can be cancelled at short notice in bad weather, and a missed ferry means a missed international flight. Book the flight to Bangkok on the same ticket as your international flight if you can; if they are separate tickets, leave a generous buffer between them, or spend the last night in Bangkok. Also check which airport you land at: a flight into Don Mueang means a cross-city transfer to Suvarnabhumi.

For a separate-ticket connection at Suvarnabhumi, my rule of thumb is at least four to five hours between landing from Samui and the international departure. You collect your bag at domestic arrivals (allow about 30 minutes for it to come out), walk out, and go up to the top floor, where check-in for both domestic and international flights is. Some airlines with only a few flights a day open their counters about three hours before departure, so you may have to wait there anyway.

If you are not in a hurry, going back overland by bus and train lets you break the journey. Hua Hin is the stop I would pick: it sits on the same southern railway line, a few hours short of Bangkok, and a night or two there turns a long transfer day into part of the trip.

Book flights on the Bangkok Airways website or compare fares on Skyscanner, Kayak or Expedia, and trains on the State Railway of Thailand's D-Ticket site. Direct fares tend to rise as the date gets closer, and flights and sleeper berths sell out first around Christmas, New Year and Thai public holidays. Can you fly from Don Mueang to Koh Samui?

Yes. Bangkok Airways runs a few direct flights a day from Don Mueang to Koh Samui, alongside its more frequent flights from Suvarnabhumi. The low-cost airlines at Don Mueang, such as Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air, fly to Surat Thani instead, not to Samui itself.

How far is Koh Samui Airport from Chaweng Beach?

Samui Airport is about 2 km north of Chaweng Beach, or around 5 km by road. A taxi or hotel transfer takes about 5 to 10 minutes, so Chaweng, Bophut and Choeng Mon are the quickest areas to reach after landing.
