1. What is the weather like in September?

September in Thailand is deep into the rainy season, making it one of the wettest months across the country, including Bangkok, the north, and the south.

To start with, Thailand has hot and humid tropical climate. However, the climate in this country is characterized by three seasons: the dry (“cool”) season usually lasts from November to February; the hot season extends from March to May; while from June until October (but there are still some exceptions in regions) it rains.

Gradually rainfall will become more frequent, and temperature will go down in September especially in northern Thailand regions. Rain falls over all parts of Thailands but amounts differ. For some places rain has increased so much that there are warnings about heavy rains for many sites across Thailand. During this month also average temperatures keep falling down (25-29 degrees) accompanied by thunderstorms when humidity is at its max level.

If you spend a few weeks in Thailand in September, it's almost inevitable that you'll encounter heavy rain at some point during your trip. September downpours usually occur in the afternoon or evening, bringing a pleasant coolness to the humid air. Although rain is expected, the temperature remains warm, and you're likely to see plenty of sunshine and blue skies between showers.

Visitors planning to explore Thailand in September should pay close attention to weather information to ensure a safe and complete trip. Below, you’ll find details about the weather conditions in Thailand during September, organized by geographical areas: north, central, and south. In fact, September is recognized as the rainiest month in Thailand.

Rainfall tends to increase in Thailand in September.

1.1. The climate in Northern Thailand

Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai, Mae Hong Son...

  • Temperatures in Northern Thailand

The dry season, which is typically associated with hotter temperatures, is usually a bit cooler than the present weather conditions but has warm days as well. Additionally, the humidity remains quite high, making it feel like there’s too much moisture even when there isn’t. This particular area experiences its lowest temperature of about twenty-three degrees Celsius, with a maximum temperature not exceeding thirty-one degrees Celsius in September.

  • Rains in Northern Thailand

Despite being in the rainy season, northern Thailand receives less rainfall during September than the southern and central parts. The rain mostly comes down in the mornings or late afternoons. It is mostly cloudy all the time. It is an appropriate time for enjoying lush environments (rice paddies, national parks, etc.). In case there have been extreme downpours for a while, making it very wet, then we may witness floods within Chiang Mai and other urban areas, along with rural flooding whenever major rivers overflow.

1.2. The climate in Central Thailand

Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin, Sukhothai...

  • Temperatures in Central Thailand

The average temperature in Bangkok and central Thailand are ranging from 25°C to 32°C, with high humidity in September, making the days warm despite the rain. This is a transitional period between the rainy season and the cooler, drier season.

1.3. The climate in the southern islands of Thailand

Contrasting with the north, southern Thailand forms part of the slender Malay Peninsula and is known for its tropical beaches and islands encircled by abrupt limestone mountains. In fact, Southern Thailand is geographically divided into two sections according to how they face to the sea: Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea. It is a division based on location as well as cartographic region

  • The weather in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Tao, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Yao...

The Gulf of Thailand area (eastern Thailand), which includes the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao..., usually has average temperatures ranging between 25 and 32ºC. Therefore, during this time period it’s warmer in the morning, thus you should visit the beach then it is usually bright. This is approximately for six hours usually noted daily in September.

  • Rainfall in the Gulf of Thailand

As the month progresses, rain becomes less frequent, resulting in overall lower rainfall. On average, there are about 18 rainy days recorded in September, but this is not considered particularly heavy rainfall. The weather usually becomes drier and sunnier as September advances. Compared to Thailand’s other coastal region along the Andaman Sea, there is a notable decrease in annual rainfall. This means that during this period of reduced rainfall, the region becomes the most favored destination for beach tourism.

The weather in the Andaman Sea: Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Similan Islands...

  • Temperatures in the Andaman Sea

The Andaman Sea area (western Thailand), popular travel destinations like Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands have a normal temperature range of 24-31ºC in September. The warm and enjoyable climate during this season is demonstrated by these temperatures.

  • Rainfall in the Andaman Sea

The island of Phuket and Krabi Province, including its islands (Phi Phi Islands, Koh Lanta, etc.), are located in the Andaman Sea zone. However, please bear in mind that September is usually considered the rainiest month of the year. The ocean will remain turbulent, and precipitation will be abundant. For surfers, it could be a season to catch some waves in Phuket, but beyond that, there isn't much to encourage other activities.

On the bright side, the weather will improve in October, so you might consider planning your trip accordingly: stay in the Gulf of Thailand in September and visit the Andaman Sea in October instead.

>>> Good to know: September is the rainiest month of the year in Thailand. It rains on an average of 20 days throughout the month, so if you travel to Thailand in September, you will most likely encounter rainy days, especially in Bangkok and central Thailand, as well as Chiang Mai and northern Thailand. However, in some areas of the south, such as the Gulf of Thailand, you can still enjoy a few days of relaxation on the beach.

1.2 The September weather in 2024

September 2024 in Thailand is set to be a splash! It’s officially the monsoon’s favorite playground, so expect everything from drizzles to dramatic downpours. As the low-pressure party gets going, the Southwest Monsoon won’t be shy, and we might even have some tropical cyclone guests swinging by, especially up north and in the northeast. So:

  • Brace yourselves for a potential splash fest with flash floods and forest streams turning into mini rivers.
  • Keep an eye on the sky (and the Thai Meteorological Department’s updates) for those cyclone party crashers.
  • Sailors and beach buffs, watch out for those cheeky gusty winds and surprise waves during cyclone season.
The sky's mood? We’re talking 60 - 80% wet, with heavy showers making grand appearances

Travel Tips:

  • Pack your rain gear and a sense of adventure—increased rainfall and unexpected pools might just be part of your itinerary.
  • Visiting farms? Watch out for early season thirst traps due to potential water shortages.
  • Stay updated with weather forecasts. It’s better to sip your coconut water indoors during a downpour than get caught in one!

Kampá Tour suggests staying plugged into reliable weather channels. Your trip can still be fantastic, just a bit damper than usual.

The information is provided by Thai Meteorological Department.

So, this season offers advantages such as discounted hotels and transportation. It's a great time to explore cultural sites in Bangkok, Chiang Mai,  Chiang Rai. Koh Samui and other Gulf islands also provide good conditions. Just be prepared to adapt to the changing weather.

2. Is it a good time to go to Thailand in September?

Of course, the answer is absolutely yes. The rainy season may be disappointing for some, but in the meantime, it is worth it. While most tourist destinations can be affected by rain, the Gulf of Thailand, which includes islands such as Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, still offers pleasant beaches at the end of the dry season.

One of the main advantages is the off-season. Prices are reasonable, from accommodations to activities, and the destinations are not that crowded. This makes for a more authentic and peaceful experience. However, it is important to adjust your plans to be prepared for rain. If you’re looking for lower prices, fewer tourists, and don’t mind the possibility of occasional rain, September could be the perfect way to explore Thailand

3. What To Do In Thailand In September?

  • Unusual Bangkok in the rain

In September, you can explore Bangkok’s iconic temples, like Wat Pho with its giant reclining Buddha and Wat Arun with its vibrant porcelain pagodas. The Grand Palace, a former royal residence, is also a must-see for its stunning traditional Thai architecture.

Rainy days are perfect for diving into Thailand’s history and arts at renowned museums such as the National Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, or the Suan Pakkad Palace Museum, housed in a historic aristocratic residence.

Shopping enthusiasts will love the large air-conditioned malls and the covered markets like Chatuchak. When the rain pauses, a stroll through Lumpini Park offers a refreshing escape.

For relaxation, Bangkok's traditional Thai spas offer soothing Ayurvedic massages. Taking a Thai cooking class is another delightful activity during rainy intervals.

And no visit to Bangkok is complete without dining in a chic restaurant or enjoying cocktails with a skyline view from a rooftop bar. Even in the monsoon, the city is full of attractions.

Despite it being the rainy season in Thailand in September, you can still find sunny moments to relax on the beaches of Phuket and Koh Phi Phi.

  • The best islands in Thailand in September

Many tourists advise against going to the islands as they visit Thailand in September; however, there are many islands that are not raining and do not have a climate that affects the journey.

In September when the Gulf of Thailand has a relatively dry climate as compared with other regions, Thailand’s topmost islands in this idyllic region emerge as an invitation to exploration. Among these Gulf diamonds are Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, which are among the countless vivacious options available for tourists.

Visit Big Buddha and Secret Gardens on Koh Samui where Thai culture springs to life with its sculptures and temples; this is a good place for those seeking refuge from rain especially if it happens to be falling there. Moreover, you could also go shopping at local markets or enjoying spa treatments offered by luxury resorts when it rains outside.

September is however different on Koh Phangan where Full Moon Party takes place. For example, take time off your schedule to visit Wat Phu Khao Noi Temple whose charm surely captures all who come across it or if one would like to have some fun away from their usual beach spots then the less crowded ones give that perfect silence and peace.

Moreover, during the month of September, Koh Tao is fully operational for divers and underwater sports lovers. The famous diving schools on the island continue to facilitate extraordinary events aimed at delving into the oceanic mysteries that lie beneath its waves. If you have an affinity for underwater excitement as well as discovering different types of marine life, then Koh Tao remains a unique center.

Though there may be some occasional showers, these mentioned islands have a calm beauty which is appreciated during this off-peak period. Added to that is the fact that fewer tourists visit them during this time making it cheaper and more enticing for people seeking peace and authenticity.

  • Elephant encounters: Khao Sok's majestic residents

Despite the wet season, it is possible to have extraordinary experiences with elephants in Khao Sok, Thailand's south. This national park is home to a number of ethical elephant camps, which allow visitors to interact with these beasts in their natural habitat.

Daily swimming excursions are maintained, save in the event of heavy weather. Nothing beats a relaxing swim in the river with these massive beasts! The guides describe elephant behavior and promote respect for these beasts.

For more comfort during the rainy season, consider a multi-day immersion stay in the park. You will help care for the elephants on a regular basis, preparing their meals and accompanying them on walks. A unique experience!

4. Can't-Miss Events: Three Highlights You Need to Experience

  • Phanom Rung temple's spectacular sunrise

In September, the Phanom Rung Khmer temple in Buriram province, northeastern Thailand, hosts a rare and enchanting spectacle. From September 7 to 9, precisely, the sun rises perfectly aligned through the temple's 15 doors.

This unique solar event only happens four times a year at Phanom Rung, drawing many visitors and photographers eager to capture this extraordinary moment. Despite the crowd, it's definitely worth experiencing this exceptional sunrise.

It's also an ideal opportunity to explore the magnificent Khmer temple of Phanom Rung, hailed as one of Thailand's most beautiful. Marvel at the temple's Angkorian architecture and intricately carved bas-reliefs.

To secure a good spot and capture the sunrise through the gates, plan to arrive early. While you may need to navigate through other photographers, the spectacle is truly worth the effort.

  •  Don't miss the traditional boat races

In September, many Thai cities host festivals featuring traditional longboat races. These events typically occur towards the end of the rainy season, when river levels are high.

Dating back over four centuries, these races feature long, handcrafted wooden boats, some stretching up to 30 meters in length. Rowing crews compete in thrilling 500-meter races, promising an unforgettable spectacle!

Long boat races in Phichit

The main destinations to watch these popular races are Phichit, Phitsanulok, Nan, Chumphon, Buriram, Saraburi, and Ayutthaya.

I particularly recommend the Phimai festival, where you can admire the boat races but also attend sound and light shows in the town's Khmer temple.

In short, September is the ideal month to discover one of the oldest Thai traditions: long boat races. An authentic experience not to be missed!

  • Hungry Ghost/Por Tor Festival

Date: 22 August - 2 September

The month-long celebration is important for Hokkien Chinese community of Phuket. The Hungry Ghost Festival includes merit-making ceremonies and various kinds of activities at Chinese shrines in memory of the dead. This event is colored by Thai-Chinese traditions which are famous in the island. It is conducted best in Phuket since that’s where the largest celebrations happen, but there are also smaller versions in other southern areas.
