1. Types of train seats in Thailand

Thailand offers different classes of seats on its trains, providing various levels of comfort and services to travelers.

  •  First Class

Offering the highest level of comfort and services, this class is also the most expensive. It is available exclusively on Rapid, Express, and Special Express trains or Daewoo primarily for overnight journeys. The carriages in this category are equipped with private air-conditioned cabins that include two berths.

  • Second Class

Second class offers excellent comfort with reclining seats and air conditioning. It also features “dormitory” compartments with rows of bunk beds. Less expensive than first class, it is a good balance of comfort and price.

2. Types of trains in Thailand

There are five main types of trains in Thailand. The choice depends on your budget and your preferences regarding speed, comfort, and services offered.

  • Special Express Trains are the most prestigious categories in Thailand, being both the fastest and the most expensive. Often equipped with sleeper cars and additional amenities, they may operate non-stop between cities or have few stops along the way. Except for route No. 37 from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok, these trains offer only first and second classes. Despite this, they are ideal for long-distance travel. The numbers of these trains range from 1 to 48.

  • Express Trains, on the other hand, offer fast and comfortable service with a higher level of comfort, although they are not as fast as Special Express Trains. Often air-conditioned, they feature reclining seats. Typically connecting major cities and tourist destinations, these trains make more stops along the way, extending travel time. If you are looking to save money while enjoying a certain level of comfort, this is a recommended option, as it is less expensive than the Special Express. The numbers of Express Trains range from 51 to 98, with first, second, and third-class cars.

  • Rapid Trains, while not particularly fast, remain comfortable. They may be air-conditioned or not and also connect major cities and destinations. With frequent stops, they take a little longer due to these layovers. Rapid Trains are the most common type of train in Thailand, so they are widely available. Their numbers range from 101 to 198, and they generally offer only second and third classes, often without air conditioning.

  • Tourist Trains are specifically designed for travelers, often offering picturesque views of the landscapes. They may be more luxurious, providing unique experiences onboard.

  • Ordinary Trains are very slow journeys, operating exclusively with third-class cars. Economical, they are perfect for those looking to minimize transportation costs. Often non-air-conditioned, they feature simple seats. They operate during the day, covering no more than 500 kilometers (312 miles). Even for short distances, they remain a viable means of transportation. The numbers of these trains range from 298 to 300.
