Introduction

A short video capturing the true beauty of Siem Riep Cambodia

Located in the southwest of the Indochinese Peninsula, Cambodia is surrounded by Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as the Gulf of Thailand on its coastline.

Its geography contrasts two territories: the great central plain on one side, home to the main centers of activity and the Khmer majority; on the other, the peripheral highlands inhabited by ethnic minorities. Cambodia has about twenty million inhabitants, including those of the Khmer community who are in the majority.

Apsara dance
Robam Tep Apsara (Khmer: របាំទេពអប្សរា) is one of the traditional dances of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia repertoire.

The country's major cities are Phnom Penh, Battambang, and Siem Reap, and the Mekong River is its main thoroughfare. The river rises in Tibet, China in the Himalayas, and flows through the country while creating vast plains and feeding the Tonle Sap, the largest lake in the region. Along it, you can go from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and then Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), the metropolis of southern Vietnam.

Angkor Wat, the oldest Templar complex in the world, is too often the only real curiosity in the country for most tourists.

But Cambodia is worth visiting for many other reasons, including the great Tonle Sap Lake, the highlands to the northeast, the stunning beaches and amazing islands on the edge of the Gulf of Thailand, not to mention its diverse wildlife. The list goes on!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cambodia?

Like any tropical country, the country has two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.

For those who love the sun, the best time to visit the Khmer country is during the dry season; it is from October to April, when the weather is always nice with temperatures varying between 25 and 30°C. Logically, these are the months during which the tourist influx is the highest.

Visiting Cambodia during the rainy season, between May and September, has its advantages too, especially for those who want to avoid the crowds. Mornings are generally clear, sunny, and precipitation is mostly in the afternoon.

The landscapes naturally become much quieter, greener and lush. These days are ideal for navigating the rivers and admiring the impressive waterfalls.

Where to Go in Cambodia?

The Temple of Angkor

It is the largest religious complex on the planet, considered one of its main wonders. As it has been depicted on the flag of Cambodia since 1863, it is the only construction in the world to appear on a national flag.

This archaeological and religious site covers more than 400 km2, giving the visitor a glimpse of the ancient Khmer civilization. Walking through the vast complex takes three days to fully understand the architectural achievements and history of the Angkorian period.

For travelers with limited time, don't miss the temples of Ta Prohm (made famous after the movie Tomb Raider), Bayon (for its 216 faces delicately carved in stone), or those of Angkor Thom and Preah Khan. It really is a must-visit site on a trip to Cambodia.

Tonle Sap Lake

The Tonle Sap is the largest body of freshwater in Southeast Asia, with an area of up to 1000 km2. Located in the middle of the country, it stretches for hundreds of kilometers and borders two major cities of the country, Battambang and Siem Reap. The lake is irrigated by the Mekong River, which rises much further to the northwest, in Chinese lands.

A rich ecosystem, with many aquatic species, characterizes the Tonle Sap. The range of its biodiversity is very wide, from freshwater fish to snakes, crocodiles, turtles and otters.

Its many inhabitants lead a lakeside life, living in floating houses or on stilts on the edges. These constructions form authentic and unusual villages, such as those of Kampong Chhnang, Ko Chen and Préc Toal. Make time for a stop during your trip to discover Khmer culture as well.

The capital Phnom Penh

Located further south of the country and not far from Vietnam, Phnom Penh is the largest and liveliest city in Cambodia, if not in the Mekong basin. In the past, the metropolis was known as the "Pearl of Asia". Its status as a capital dates back to the French colonial era. It is home to a multitude of important historical sites, marking the difference between the country's ancient and modern periods.

The National Museum houses Khmer sculptures tracing the nation's rich past since the pre-Angkorian age. Similarly, the Royal Palace exhibits beautiful works of traditional art. The Tuol Sleng Museum and the Choeung Ek Death Fields, meanwhile, are reminders of the brutality of the Khmer Rouge regime in more recent times.

Sihanoukville, its paradisiacal islands

For fans of beach, sun and surf, Sihanoukville is a must-see getaway destination from Phnom Penh. This southern coastal city is famous for having some of the most beautiful seafronts in Cambodia.

30-50 minutes off the coast of Sihanoukville, the two large islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem retain a special rustic charm, not just in their stunning beaches. You can swim there (literally and figuratively!) in a relaxed atmosphere that you don't always find elsewhere.

These island paradises are also home to a tropical coral reef system as well as an abundance of colorful fish. This natural environment also contributes a lot to the pleasure of spending relaxing days and fun dives.

The smaller islands of the archipelago, such as Koh Thmei and Koh Ta Kiev, also offer a real Robinson Crusoe atmosphere! The nightlife in Sihanoukville is one of the liveliest in the country, with its casinos to try your luck! There are also admirable cultural and natural sites, from unique markets and monuments to unforgettable waterfalls.

Ratanakiri

Located in the northeast of Cambodia bordering Laos and Vietnam, Ratanakiri is a must-see for travelers looking for true off-the-beaten-path experiences. By visiting this destination, you will get a glimpse into the life and culture of ethnic minority (non-Khmer) groups.

You can also hike in the national parks, and go camping safari to observe unique wildlife, including gibbon monkeys. The northern yellow-cheeked ones were discovered in 2010, and the Cambodian province is home to their largest known population.

The small town of Ban Lung is the capital of Ratanakiri. Located close to these spectacular natural attractions, it is the best base for exploring the area.

Mondulkiri

120 km from Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri is the least populated region of Cambodia. This province offers great opportunities to meet other tribal minorities and learn about conservation projects. You can also relax in lush rainforests, admiring towering waterfalls.

The "Elephant Valley" project aims to improve the health and well-being of Mondulkiri's elephants. It offers them a sanctuary, spread over several hectares of forest, where they can move freely without being threatened. You can visit the center for a day or even spend the night there to support this NGO-run programme.

The show of Apsara, a traditional dance of Cambodia

The land of the Khmer is steeped in history and traditions. One of the best examples is the Apsara dance, known for its sparkling costumes and fascinating hand movements. It dates back to the seventh century and is inspired by the Hindu and Buddhist mythologies of Cambodia.

Because it belongs exclusively to the Khmer culture, attending an Apsara show is a must during a stay in Cambodia. In Phnom Penh, Cambodian Living Arts organizes nightly performances at the National Museum. Several restaurants and theaters in Siem Reap also allow visitors to experience these choreographies.

How Long Does It Take to Travel to Cambodia?

Five to seven days is the ideal minimum time to travel well to most of the must-see sites of the Khmer country, starting from Siem Reap first. We can only advise you to stay at least three days in this city, the gateway to the Angkor temple complex. There will be plenty of time to discover the bustling streets as well as the architectural and historical gems of Phnom Penh, in one or two days.

With three or four extra days, you can add Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri to your week-long Cambodia itinerary. This will allow you to explore a more "wild" country, away from the tourist circuits. This preserved authenticity is the delight of seasoned travelers.

If you like seaside activities and idleness, another step is a must: relax for two or three days on the best-preserved beaches of Sihanoukville. This is an ideal conclusion to a trip to Cambodia, staying close to the center of this city during the day so that you can party at night. But if you're more of a fan of peace and quiet, we recommend going to the nearby islands of Koh Rong or Koh Rong Samloem.

Why Should You Choose a Vietnam-Cambodia Tour Package?

Although Vietnam and Cambodia border each other, you may be surprised to note their differences. A two-week Vietnam-Cambodia tour offers the opportunity to discover these distinct Asian destinations in a short time. Many foreign visitors end their stay in Vietnam with an extension to Cambodia.

Starting the tour from Hanoi, in the north of Vietnam, allows you to embark on a smoother and faster route. You will then continue south to the Mekong Delta, from where you will reach Cambodia. Travel up to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap by boat, a convenient and comfortable means of transportation.
