Koh Phi Phi: A Complete Guide Based on First-Hand Experiences
Thailand, fondly known as the “Land of Smiles,” has earned its place as one of Asia’s most sought-after destinations. With its rich culture, warm hospitality, and diverse landscapes, it captivates travelers from across the globe. Among its many treasures, Thailand’s stunning beaches and tropical islands stand out as irresistible highlights.
Nestled in the Andaman Sea, south of Phuket, the Koh Phi Phi archipelago is a dream destination for beach enthusiasts. Comprising six islands, with Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh being the most renowned, this paradise is celebrated for its powdery white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and dramatic limestone cliffs.
During my recent trip to Thailand, I had the privilege of exploring this extraordinary destination. Join me as I recount my journey through Koh Phi Phi, uncovering its breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable charm.
1. How to get to Koh Phi Phi?
Koh Phi Phi is located off the coast of Phuket Province in southwest Thailand. To reach Koh Phi Phi, the most convenient route is to first fly to Phuket and then take a boat/ferry from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi.
From Bangkok to Phuket:
Phuket is located about 800 km from Bangkok. There are several means of transport to get there:
- Airplane: The fastest and most convenient way, with a flight time of about one hour. Airlines like Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Vietjet Air or Thai Lion Air offer frequent flights.
- Bus or train: These options are more economical but require more time, approximately 14 hours of travel.
How to get from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket?
From Phuket, ferries or speedboats run to Koh Phi Phi Don, the main island of the archipelago. The journey takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the type of boat chosen. Ferries follow a set schedule each day: The last departure from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi is usually at 15:30 , and in the opposite direction, the last return from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket is at 17:00 .
It is recommended to book your bus, train or boat tickets in advance for better organization. Sites like Klook or 12go.asia make these reservations easy.
👉 My experience to reach Koh Phi Phi
On my trip, I took a Thai AirAsia flight from Bangkok to Phuket. Since Phuket airport is located quite far from the city center, and my flight arrives late at night, I opted for a taxi to reach the center. If your flight arrives earlier, you can also choose the shared bus, a more economical option.
From Phuket to Koh Phi Phi I traveled by speed boat. This mode of transport is not only faster but also more comfortable for people who are susceptible to seasickness. It significantly reduces the travel time, which is a great advantage.
Some practical advice:
- There are several companies offering boats to Koh Phi Phi, with departures from different ports. Be sure to check in advance which port corresponds to your company and arrive about 15 minutes before the departure time.
- To reach the port from your accommodation in Phuket, I used taxi services via apps like Grab and Bolt. In Thailand, Bolt is often more widespread and convenient to use.
2. What to do in Koh Phi Phi?
Koh Phi Phi is a beautiful archipelago that attracts many travelers from all over the world. In order to preserve its natural environment, tourist activities are strictly regulated and organized. The layout of Koh Phi Phi Don, in my opinion, is very well thought out. The accommodation and catering areas are concentrated in the center of the island, and the use of motorized vehicles is prohibited. Thus, tourists must move around on foot to explore the island.
I had about 2 days to visit Koh Phi Phi, and I think it's an ideal length of time. In two days, here's what I was able to experience:
-
Beach and scuba diving activities
The water around Koh Phi Phi Don is very clear, however the main beach of the island also serves as a port for tourist boats. Therefore, during the day it is usually quite crowded. If you want to go swimming, it is best to do so early in the morning or after 3pm, when the island tour boats have left Koh Phi Phi Don.

The island boasts numerous diving centers that cater to both beginners and experienced divers, offering courses and organizing underwater excursions. For those who prefer a more casual exploration of marine life, joining an island tour is an excellent option.
These tours often include opportunities for swimming and snorkeling, allowing you to marvel at vibrant coral reefs and colorful tropical fish. If you're staying at a luxury resort with a private beach, you’ll have the added privilege of enjoying the serene sea at your leisure, right at your doorstep.
-
Sunset at Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint
Witnessing the sunset from the Koh Phi Phi Don viewpoint is an experience you shouldn’t miss. The breathtaking view of the golden hues painting the Andaman Sea and the twin bays of Tonsai and Loh Dalum is truly unforgettable.
From the center of town, you’ll find clear signs leading to the trailhead for the viewpoint. The path is well-maintained with solid steps, ensuring a safe ascent. Entrance to the viewpoint costs 50 baht and grants access to three different vantage points. Among these, Viewpoint 2 is often considered the best spot for sunset, offering a spectacular, unobstructed panorama.

Among these, Maya Bay stands out as a must-visit destination, renowned for its breathtaking scenery and crystal-clear waters. Often described as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, it’s a sight that should not be missed.
During my stay, I booked a shared 4-hour speedboat tour to explore the area. The tour began at 10:00 AM and concluded around 2:00 PM, providing ample time to soak in the stunning landscapes and turquoise waters.

Food, massage, leisure and shopping activities
These activities are a must-do on any trip. Koh Phi Phi offers many restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, from traditional Thai to Western and Indian dishes, with varying prices. You can choose from restaurants in the town center or the food stalls at Phi Phi Market, which are often cheaper. There are also 7 Eleven stores for travelers on a tighter budget.
During my stay, I tried meals purchased at 7 Eleven, the market and restaurants, all offering delicious Thai flavors. Those who like a lively or romantic atmosphere can relax in bars or pubs. The island also has many massage parlors for those who want to relax, as well as souvenir shops where it is advisable to bargain.

- Destinations: Check which islands and bays are covered, as some tours focus on specific highlights like Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, or Bamboo Island.
- Services and benefits: Most tours provide snorkeling equipment, life jackets, and refreshments. Full-day tours often include lunch, while half-day tours may offer drinks and fruits.
2. Additional Costs
Keep in mind that some tours do not include the entrance fee to Maya Bay (400 baht), so confirm this detail during booking. If it’s excluded, you’ll need to pay it separately upon arrival.
By paying attention to these details, you can choose the tour that best fits your schedule and preferences, ensuring an unforgettable experience exploring Koh Phi Phi’s stunning surroundings.
3. Points of Interest During Excursions:
Maya Bay: Undoubtedly the crown jewel of any Koh Phi Phi excursion, Maya Bay is a must-visit destination that captivates travelers with its unparalleled beauty. Monkey Beach: You can observe monkeys living on the island, climbing on the rocks. Visitors are not allowed to climb onto the island, they can only observe the monkeys from the boat or by swimming near the shore.
Viking Cave: You can admire a natural cave where the inhabitants climb to collect swallow nests, a very valuable product. Visitors can observe the cave from the boat.

Bamboo Island: Relaxation, swimming and diving (for day tours)
Shark Point: You can swim and snorkel to see sharks.
▶️ I chose a half-day speed boat tour, purchased directly from an agent on Koh Phi Phi Don Island. Before booking, it is advisable to compare prices from several agencies. The base price was 1,200 baht, but after negotiation, I got a rate of 1,050 baht per person. The departure was at 10am and the return at 2pm.
The itinerary included: Monkey Beach, Phi Phi Le, Viking Cave, Maya Bay, Shark Point, then back to Koh Phi Phi. The price includes swimming and snorkeling equipment, environmental fees for Maya Bay, as well as fruit and drinks. Payment is made upon booking, with a meeting point usually at the McDonald's on the island. It is advisable to arrive 30 minutes before departure for the call of participants.
The guide gives you a bracelet to identify your group and shows you the places to visit. The visiting time is limited to 30 minutes per site, except at Maya Bay where it is 1h30. It is important to follow the guide's instructions to avoid getting lost, as the sites are often very busy.
I went in late December 2024, during peak season, with ideal weather for water activities. Although there were many boats and visitors, the organization was smooth and there was no rush. The sites were clean and the water was clear. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Overall, I am very satisfied with the tour. A tip for the guide is appreciated if you are satisfied, but it is not mandatory.
4. My personal opinion on Koh Phi Phi
For me, Koh Phi Phi is truly beautiful and worth a visit. The island is well developed and preserved, with significant efforts to limit the impact of tourism on the natural environment. I particularly appreciate the fact that locals and tourists do not use motorized vehicles, which is excellent for the preservation of the ecosystem.
The site I liked the most is undoubtedly Maya Bay, whose natural beauty is truly impressive.
Being a very popular tourist destination, the island is often crowded, and tours follow fixed itineraries with limited visiting times. While these activities may seem industrialized and commercial, I believe this is a necessary response to the high tourist influx, while still allowing visitors to have interesting experiences.
5. Practical tips for a successful trip
-
When to go to Koh Phi Phi?
It is advisable to visit Koh Phi Phi during the dry season, preferably between October and April, with December being particularly pleasant, offering dry weather, not too hot, and perfect for fully enjoying the activities.
-
How long in Koh Phi Phi?
If you don't have much time and want to save money, you can do a day trip and return to Phuket. Otherwise, a minimum of 2 days is ideal, and if you want more relaxation, 3 days are recommended.
-
Cash
It is best to bring cash, as not all establishments accept credit cards. However, there are several ATMs on the island to withdraw money if necessary.
-
Travel on Koh Phi Phi
Getting around the island is mostly done on foot or by boat, so it is advisable to be in good physical shape and to pack light luggage to make getting around easier. The center of the island, with its many shops and hotels packed tightly together, is quite small, but can be confusing with its many alleyways. Make sure you have access to the internet to navigate if necessary. SIM cards work well on the island.
-
Accommodation and cost of living in Koh Phi Phi
Accommodation and tourism prices on Koh Phi Phi can be relatively high. If you are on a tighter budget, you can choose to visit Koh Phi Phi in a day from Phuket without staying overnight, which will help reduce costs. However, to fully enjoy the experience, spending a night on the island is still a great option.
My last words,
For me, Koh Phi Phi is definitely a destination not to be missed during your trip to Thailand, especially if you are passionate about the sea and nature. With its breathtaking landscapes, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, the archipelago offers an unforgettable experience. Between the discovery of the beaches, diving activities, boat trips and moments of relaxation, Koh Phi Phi will meet all your expectations. I hope this information will give you a clear vision of what this place has to offer and will allow you to prepare yourself well to live a unique experience in this island paradise. Have a good trip and fully enjoy this adventure in Koh Phi Phi!
