Is Koh Lipe Right for You? A Local’s Guide to Nature, Culture, and Relaxation

As a local, I've sometimes overlooked the southern island of Koh Lipe in favor of popular spots like Phuket or Koh Samui. However, don't underestimate Koh Lipe. Having witnessed Koh Lipe’s transformation over the years, I find its enduring charm lies in the perfect balance it maintains between accessibility and unspoiled nature.
I'll explain why it's the perfect fit, offering a beautiful harmony of nature, culture, and relaxation.

1. Location

Tucked away in the south of Thailand, close to the Malaysian border, lies an island paradise called Koh Lipe.

Koh Lipe Thailand

Situated in the Andaman Sea and part of the Tarutao National Marine Park, Koh Lipe is surrounded by beautiful, coral-rich waters, making it truly heaven on earth.

  • Nature:

Koh Lipe's charm lies in its many beautiful beaches. Pattaya Beach is a top choice, but the lesser-known ethumnastern shores are just as stunning, with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, making them a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Chao Le Beach is a gem perfect for rest and respite. For peace and tranquility, visit Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach, offering the perfect balance of morning and evening serenity.

A personal recommendation is to explore the island's secret beach. To find this well-kept secret, simply walk along the wooden bridge at the end of Pattaya Beach!

  • Culture:

Koh Lipe is a cultural treasure trove, home to the aboriginal Malay group, the U Rak Woi, and the indigenous Chao Ley, also known as the Sea Gypsies. These communities are the heartbeat of the island, celebrated through colorful festivals and daily rituals that honor their deep connection to the sea. Strolling along the shoreline, you'll witness their incredible traditional boat-building skills, a craft handed down through generations.

Engaging with the Chao Ley community offers a fascinating glimpse into their way of life, enriching your experience and deepening your appreciation for Koh Lipe's unique cultural heritage and timeless bond with the water.

Early morning yoga classes with stunning ocean views allow visitors to catch the first light of dawn. Numerous spas offer holistic therapies and Thai massages, providing relaxation amid the calming sounds of nature. 2. How to Get to Koh Lipe? Local Transportation Tips

Getting to Koh Lipe is an adventure in itself, combining convenience with stunning scenery.

  • The easiest route is a direct flight from Bangkok or Phuket to Hat Yai, costing between $30 and $100 if booked early.
  • For a more affordable and scenic option, take a train to Trang for $15 to $45, then a local bus to the pier for $3 to $7, and finally a boat to the island for $6 to $20. This journey offers breathtaking views of southern Thailand's picturesque countryside.
  • Recently, Nok Air, Air Asia, and Thai Lion Air have also started offering direct flights to Trang, priced between $40 and $120, for a quicker connection.

4. Must-See Attractions and Top Must-Do Activities

4.1 Sunrise Beach

The name itself is a pledge. This is a very magical place to see the sunrise since the early light paints the sky in vivid pink and orange tones. The serene haven of golden sands is perfect for strolls in the morning.

4.2 Snorkeling among coral reefs

The pristine waters at Koh Usen and around Sunrise Beach are renowned for their thriving marine life and coral reefs. Snorkeling trips are affordable, usually costing between $15 and $30 USD, and include all the gear needed for an amazing submerged experience.

Snorkeling in Koh Lipe
A snorkeler's dream came true

The question is: Where to snorkel?

  • Koh Usen: Swim from Sunrise Beach in 10 minutes, but beware of strong currents. Rent a kayak from Castaway or Mali Resort for 150 THB/hour and park among the rocks on the east side.
  • Koh Kra: Located off Sunrise Beach, north towards Koh Adang. Kayak from Koh Usen or take a shorter trip from Salisa Resort.
  • Sunset Beach: Swim 50 meters from Bayview Sunset Bungalows to find a coral reef among the rocks. Walk halfway along the rocks and jump in near the coral.
  • Pattaya Beach: Not recommended due to many sea urchins.

4.3 Chado Cliff Viewpoint on Koh Adang

Chado Cliff offers spectacular views, especially in the evening. The trek up, which takes two to three hours depending on stops, features three overlooks with increasingly breathtaking views of Koh Lipe and the surrounding waters. From the highest points, the entire island of Koh Lipe is visible, surrounded by crystal-clear, turquoise waters. Hikers should wear strong walking shoes, carry water, and use sunscreen. This excursion is ideal for those looking to avoid the busier areas of Koh Lipe, with plenty of boats available for the return trip.

4.4 Walking Street

Walking Street is lively and bustling, with some bars remaining open until the wee hours of the morning. It comes alive from 6 PM until well beyond midnight. It's easier to find from Pattaya Beach (follow the signpost opposite the plastic dock), but from Sunrise Beach it's a little more difficult to spot. Head through Anda Resort and past the pool to find this vibrant hub.

The street is more well-known for its many dining options than its beach views. You may find American-style burgers at Elephant Cafe and Bar and Spanish tapas at The Box, which is run by a Spanish chef. It's the center of Koh Lipe's nightlife, with stores closing at around 10 PM and restaurants staying open until at least midnight.

4.5 Wat Hantalay

Located between Pattaya Beach and Sunset Beach, Wat Hantalay is a serene retreat surrounded by beautiful vegetation. Despite being modest, the temple is quite valuable culturally since it has two shrine halls with statues of Buddha and Brahma in each. Besides being allowed to meditate here, visitors are urged to dress decently and think about giving. For travelers traveling between the beaches, this serene and historically significant temple is a must-see.

4.6 Dive with Dolphins and Whales

Marine life around Koh Lipe is surreal, and diving takes you even deeper into this underwater world. Dive sites include underwater caves, shipwrecks, and deep reefs, home to about 25% of the world’s tropical fish species. You might also see dolphins, whale sharks, sperm whales, eagle rays, and mantas.

Pro Tip: Forra Diving is highly recommended. A fun dive costs around 1,500 baht ($44), and the Open Water course is 14,500 baht ($429).

4.7 Kayaking on Koh Lipe

Kayaks are available to rent from every beach on Koh Lipe, with Pattaya Beach being a popular choice. You can rent a two-person kayak and life jackets for 200 baht (£4.36 or $5.40) from a wooden shack next to a dive school at the far end of the beach. The rental price is consistent across the island.

 Kayaking on Koh Lipe

While it is possible to circumnavigate the island in a couple of hours, a shorter route is often more enjoyable. Paddling from Pattaya Beach, you can explore the nearby beaches and rocky outcrops, perfect for snorkeling. Several "secret" beaches can be found along the way, some bustling with kayakers and selfie-takers.

A secluded beach surrounded by high cliffs, accessible only by sea, offers a perfect spot to drag your kayak ashore and enjoy the crystal-clear water with small fish swimming around you. This secluded spot is the highlight of the island adventure, making kayaking here highly recommended for an unforgettable experience.

4.8 Visit Koh Adang

Ko Adang, the second-largest island in Tarutao National Marine Park, is located just a short distance from Ko Lipe. This unspoiled paradise in the Andaman Sea offers a serene escape, with even the busiest days seeing only a handful of people sharing its stunning 1.3km stretch of pristine white sand. While most visitors make a day trip from Koh Lipe, staying overnight on Ko Adang is highly recommended.

The island’s only true resort, Koh Adang Resort, provides a unique opportunity to experience its natural beauty overnight. You can also enjoy activities like kayaking or canoeing around the island.

5. Flavors of Koh Lipe: A Foodie's Guide to the Island's Best Eats

6.2 Koh Lanta: A digital nomad haven with less snorkeling

Koh Lanta, larger and more varied, is ideal for longer stays or digital nomads. Known for its thriving food scene, coffee culture, and welcoming atmosphere, it’s perfect for those seeking local culture, wellness, and relaxation. While it lacks direct beach snorkeling, boat trips to nearby islands like Koh Rok and Koh Ha offer excellent underwater experiences.

A 30-minute boat ride from Koh Lipe, Koh Adang features rocky shorelines, immaculate beaches, and crystal-clear snorkeling conditions. The island also boasts strenuous trekking routes leading to breathtaking Andaman Sea vistas. 8. Koh Lipe: A Tranquil Alternative to Langkawi and Phuket

From November through April, visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports and a relaxed ambiance on Koh Lipe. While the nightlife is more subdued compared to the vibrant scenes in Langkawi and Phuket, there is still plenty of entertainment to be found, with beachfront bars and local festivals adding to the charm.

Langkawi
Langkawi is a serene archipelago of 140 islands – only a few of which are inhabited.

Koh Lipe offers a serene contrast to Thailand's busier islands, combining tranquility with local charm. Unlike Phuket, which is known for its bustling streets and crowded beaches, Koh Lipe provides a more intimate and peaceful experience. The island's smaller size and limited development help preserve its natural beauty, making it a perfect escape from the crowds.

Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe provides a more intimate and peaceful experience

Compared to Langkawi, which is larger and more commercialized, Koh Lipe's remote location makes it feel more exclusive and untouched. While Langkawi offers duty-free shopping and numerous tourist attractions, Koh Lipe captivates visitors with its pure sandy stretches, ideal for snorkeling and diving.

Last words

Though more secluded and somewhat pricier due to its location, Koh Lipe offers a cleaner and more tranquil alternative. Its unspoiled environment and slower pace provide a refreshing retreat from typical tourist hotspots. Ideal for both relaxation and adventure, Koh Lipe's clear waters, white sand beaches, and peaceful atmosphere create unforgettable memories. For those seeking Thailand’s stunning beaches and authentic cultural experiences, Koh Lipe remains an attractive destination.
