1. Where to Land When Traveling to Laos?

There are 11 airports in Laos offering domestic and international flights, of which four are international airports: Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Luang Prabang International Airport, Savannakhet International Airport, and Pakse International Airport.

Despite its relatively underdeveloped infrastructure, Laos offers travelers an authentic and preserved experience. Visitors can make layovers in neighboring countries like China, Korea, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam, as there are no direct flights between Europe and Laos. This approach allows travelers to combine different cultural experiences and explore a variety of landscapes in Southeast Asia.

Wattay International Airport is the largest and most important airport in Laos. Also known as Vientiane Airport, it serves as the main gateway to Laos, located just 3 km from the center of the capital. Many international tourists choose this airport as their entry point into the country.

Domestic flights to and from Wattay Airport are operated by most national airlines such as Lao Airlines and Lao Skyway.

Lao Airlines is the only carrier operating here, offering domestic flights to Vientiane and Pakse, as well as international flights to Bangkok (Thailand) and Da Nang (Vietnam).

3.4 Pakse International Airport (PKZ)

  • Address: Champasak Province, Laos
  • Airport Code: PKZ

Pakse is the busiest city in southern Laos, and its international airport is inspired by the Lan Xang architectural style commonly seen in Laotian Buddhist temples, with distinctive pointed roofs.

The airport has a terminal for both international and domestic flights. Pakse offers international connections to several Southeast Asian countries and domestic connections to other Laotian airports. Given its small size, the number of flights is limited, so it is recommended to check schedules in advance for proper planning.

The airport provides complete facilities, including ATMs, shops, restaurants, internet access, and charging zones. It’s located only 3 km from the city center, making it easy to get there by taxi, tuk-tuk, or bus.

4. Domestic Airports in Laos

Laos currently has 10 operational domestic airports, although they are not widely known or popular among international tourists. These airports primarily offer flights to the capital, Vientiane, or to Luang Prabang, operated by national airlines Lao Airlines and Lao Skyway.

Due to their small size and the limited number of flights, it’s important to check flight statuses to plan your trip accordingly.
