Inaugurated in 1986, this immense park was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2003 because of its remarkable geological attractions and its remarkable biodiversity. Indeed, Phong Nha Ke Bang is home to the oldest karst formations in Asia, dating from the Paleolithic era (around 400 million years BC).

💡The latest news: "Recently, in July 2024, the American magazine Travel+Leisure has rated Quang Binh, the central province with its famous Phong Nha national park, as one of the 13 most beautiful destinations in the world. At the same time, the prestigious travel guide Lonely Planet has also announced that Quang Binh has 4 of the 6 most recommended destinations to visit in Vietnam.

What is the biggest cave in Phong Nha National Park?

Son Đoong Cave is the largest in the Phong Nha complex and in the world
Son Doong Cave is the largest in the Phong Nha complex and in the world

Hang Son Doong Cave is the centerpiece of the Phong Nha cave complex, and it holds the coveted title of the largest natural cave in the world. It is part of a vast underground network that connects more than 150 other caves in Vietnam, near the border with Laos.

In the 20th century, scientists and explorers discovered countless caves, including that of Son Doong, the cave of all records. The latter measures almost 5 kilometers long, 200 meters high and 150 meters wide. Enough to accommodate a skyscraper! Unfortunately, its visit is restricted to researchers and knowledgeable athletes.

In 2013, the cave was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest natural cave.

💡Practical information: The only company authorized to organize expeditions in Son Doong is Oxalis. You must contact them directly to explore the cave. The current price on their website for an expedition to Son Doong is approximately 3000 USD per person, depending on the season.

According to the latest news: The 2024 and 2025 Son Doong Exploration Tour is full (no longer available), and Oxalis is already selling tours for 2026. Booking a tour to conquer Son Doong Cave on the nearest date is not easy.

Things to Do in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

  • Phong Nha Cave

To top the list of attractions for our guests is the Phong Nha Cave. This 7.7-kilometer cave has been declared a UNESCO cultural heritage and is recognized as the longest subterranean cave in Asia. The adventure starts by boarding a traditional dragon boat. For 6 kilometers, one will be softly rocked by the waves while beholding the breathtaking emerald blue Son River. There is plenty of time for enjoying the scenic fishing boats, tiny villages, green tropical forests, and karst landforms covered with lush greenery.

From there, the boat will head inside Phong Nha Cave. The atmosphere is really incredible, with the contrast of light against the walls of the cave, as well as the appearance of massive stalactites, stalagmites and cavities in many shapes. It feels like a visit to a moon landscape. At the end of the tour, there will be a chance to cross the cave, thus bringing one closer to the karst formations.

On the way back from Phong Nha Cave, tourists can climb hundreds of steps to reach the mysterious Tien Son Cave, which is 400 meters from Phong Nha. Tien Son is an excellent dry cave, much older than Phong Nha. Some outstanding features of the cave are its spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the fact that it makes echoing sounds similar to gongs and drums when the walls are tapped. It feels like an adventure into the unknown – Indiana Jones style.

Sightseeing ticket price:

  • Adults: 150,000 VND/ticket (~$6)
  • Children under 1.3 meters: Free
  • Boat going into the cave: 550,000 VND/trip (~$25), maximum 12 guests

>>>GOOD TO KNOW: Not only was Quang Binh province voted by "Travel + Leisure," but it was also rated by Lonely Planet magazine as the most worthwhile place to visit in Vietnam, with all three spots being part of the "Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park" system.
