Tattoo Thailand: Sak Yant Secrets And Sacred Traditional Designs

Tattoo Thailand: Sak Yant Secrets And Sacred Traditional Designs

My passion for tattoos extends to both realistic and abstract designs. I am always interested in exploring new trends in tattooing, and I had the opportunity to delve into the Thailand tattoo world when I attended the International Lille Tattoo Convention in 2023. There, I encountered some exceptional Thai tattoo artists who introduced me to the rich and mysterious world of Thai tattoo art.

These artists explained how they use prayers and incantations to infuse spiritual power into their tattoos. I was immediately captivated and learned so much from our conversations. Now, I want to share this fascinating art form with fellow tattoo lovers. What makes Thai tattooing so special, with its deep symbolic, religious, and aesthetic significance? Join me in this discovery!

1. Why Choose To Get A Tattoo In Thailand?

Thailand is a paradise for tattoo enthusiasts, boasting world-renowned parlors recognized at international conventions, all at affordable prices. But there's more to it. Thai tattoos have a rich history rooted in ancient traditions.

Thai tattoos are very old, dating back to the Khmer Empire at the time of Angkor in the 9th century AD. Thai warriors had Sak Yant tattoos all over their bodies in the hope of being protected by the gods on the battlefields and to make their flesh invulnerable to sword blows, thus repelling enemies and evil spirits.

Thai tattoos hold profound meanings, serving as protection against evil spirits. They are believed to enhance luck, reflect character traits, and improve health and prosperity. The traditional form of tattooing in Thailand is called "Sak Yant."

This impressive art is deeply spiritual and tied to Buddhism. Experiencing an authentic Sak Yant tattoo involves more than just the tattoo itself; it encompasses the religious and spiritual rituals associated with it. Therefore, getting a true Sak Yant tattoo is not just a simple process.

2. What is a Sak Yant Thai tattoo?

First things first, what does Sak Yant mean? In this context, "sak" means "to tap" or "to tattoo," and "yant" means "yantra," which is originally a Sanskrit word. Sak Yant tattoos are traditional Thai tattoos featuring sacred geometrical designs. Each intricate element has specific meanings for the wearer.

A Sak Yant tattoo includes three main elements:

  • Yantras: Sacred motifs with ancient symbols, images of animals, or deities.
  • Mantras and Prayers: Phrases in Pali that are believed to confer magical powers on the wearer.
  • Final Blessing: Pronounced at the end of the tattoo process to activate its power, magic, and protective properties.

"Sak" means "to tattoo" and "Yant" comes from the Sanskrit "yantra", evoking sacred prayer

The design choice is based on your preferences, personal history, and future plans. The Sak Yant ceremony starts with a consultation with the Sak Yant master, who explains the meanings and helps you choose a tattoo that aligns with your wishes.

Before the tattooing begins, a sacred prayer is recited to establish a spiritual connection. After the tattooing, a second prayer in Pali activates its powers. This is why a true Sak Yant can only be obtained from a specialized master.

>>>GOOD TO KNOW:  To become a master who can perform Sak Yant tattoos on others, several rituals are required, including the hand blessing ceremony, the blessing of needles, and the blessing of books. However, some tattoo artists do not follow these classes strictly, not adhering to the teachings of Sak Yant's scriptures, resulting in unintentional errors, most of which are random drawings rather than authentic inscriptions. These mistakes can have negative consequences, instead of attracting luck and prosperity, our lives can take a different turn.

3. Where should Sak Yant be tattooed on the body?

The preferred area is the back of the neck (nape of the neck), as this is believed to be the gateway to the major chakra, or on the shoulder or upper back, near the head, considered auspicious according to Buddhist beliefs.

Most Sak Yant masters refuse to tattoo this design below the navel, considering it sacrilege due to the elimination of bodily waste in this region. This area is not suitable for a sacred tattoo.

4. The Most Common Sak Yant Patterns

Sak Yant tattoos consist of intricate patterns and symbols, each believed to possess unique meanings and powers. Some of the most popular designs include the Hah Taew (5 Rows), the Gao Yord (9 Vertices), and the Paed Tidt (8 Directions). These tattoos are not only aesthetically impressive but also carry deep spiritual significance.

If you are considering getting a tattoo in Thailand, why not choose a Sak Yant tattoo for its special and meaningful significance?

  • 4.1 Hah Taew (5 rows)

The 5-row tattoo, known as Ha Taew in Thailand, was traditionally worn mostly by women and was less common among the Thai population. Since 2016, it has gained popularity in the West, especially after Angelina Jolie got it tattooed on her back.

The Ha Taew is believed to bring health and prosperity to its wearer. It features five sentences in Pali, arranged vertically. While the exact meaning may vary between masters, it generally includes the following:

  • 1st line: Protect and purify the being, while repelling evil spirits.
  • 2nd line: Keep wealth risks away and protect against bad karma.
  • 3rd line: Shield against black magic and malicious people.
  • 4th line: Attract success, fortune, and luck.
  • 5th line: Enhance charisma and boost the effects of the third and fourth lines.

  • 4.2 Gao Yord (9 vertices)

The Yant Gao Yord is a popular tattoo in Thailand, known for bringing good luck and protection from both magical and physical attacks. Featuring nine arrows pointing upwards, it is often considered one of the first Sak Yant tattoos by many Thais.

The number nine holds significant meaning in Thai culture. It represents the nine peaks of Mount Meru in Buddhist mythology, regarded as the center of the spiritual universe. In Hindu cosmology, it corresponds to the nine planets ruled by deities. In Thailand, the number nine is considered lucky, symbolizing progress and advancement.

This Sak Yant tattoo typically includes 25 small squares, each containing specific protection spells written in Khom, an ancient Khmer language. Surrounding these squares are ovals representing the nine Buddhas, each conferring different powers or spells, adding profound spiritual meaning.

  • 4.3 Paed Tidt (8 directions)

The Yant Paed Tidt is a popular geometric Sak Yant among Thais and tattoo enthusiasts alike. This design features a circle with Khom phrases blessed by a Buddhist monk and eight ovals, each symbolizing Lord Buddha, with arrows pointing in the eight directions of the universe.

Created for complete protection against evil spirits and threats from all directions, the tattoo is often linked to travel due to its compass-like design. Many people view it as "the traveler's compass," believing it offers protection during their adventures.

  • 4.4 The Yant Suea Koo (Twin Tiger Tattoo)

The Suea Koo tattoo is represented by two powerful tigers, symbols of combativeness and resistance. The tigers are accompanied by Pali phrases forming a half-moon, symbolizing the light that guides our path in the dark. In the center is the Yant Putsoorn, representing the Buddha and wisdom, strengthening spiritual connection and open-mindedness.

Yant Suea Koo is extremely popular in Thailand, especially among people in dangerous professions such as police officers, military personnel, Muay Thai fighters, and firefighters. It is also the preferred choice of businessmen to strengthen their leadership and outperform their competitors. Considered a professional secret, it allows them to reap successes in their field.

5. Wat Bang Phra: The Temple Of Thai Sacred Tattoos

Wat Bang Phra is an ancient temple that dates back to the 18th century, located 50 km west of Bangkok. He is famous for his sacred Sak Yant tattoos. The monk Phra Udom Prachanart, also called Luang Phor Pern, was the former abbot of the temple. He is a respected figure who has done much to develop and popularize Sak Yant among Thais.

Every March, the temple hosts a large sacred tattoo festival to honor master tattoo artists and Luang Phor Pern. Thousands of Buddhist devotees and Sak Yant enthusiasts gather in the temple's central courtyard. The festival can be intense, with some participants entering trances, roaring like tigers or moving like snakes, showing their deep connection to the spiritual energies of their tattoos.

At Wat Bang Phra, Sak Yant tattoos are created by hand, using a sharp bamboo stick called Sak Mai or a metal version called Sak Khem. The ink varies by gender: black for men and transparent for women. Monks wear gloves when tattooing women to avoid direct contact.

The Buddhist monk selects designs based on the recipient's personality, wishes, and surrounding energies. Each motif has its own meaning and offers specific blessings and protections. The process concludes with a final blessing, where special intentions and desires are expressed. Only an authentic Sak Yant master, trained in the magical arts, can perform this blessing.
