December 2026 in Thailand at a glance

December 2026 brings three large international music festivals (Wonderfruit, Tomorrowland Thailand and EDC Thailand), a four-month contemporary art biennale in Bangkok, and a run of long-established Thai events, from the River Kwai Bridge Week in Kanchanaburi to the Red Cross Fair in Lumpini Park. The table lists them in date order, with where each takes place and how firm the dates are.

Three public holidays fall in December: 5 December, the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), which is also Thailand's National Day and Father's Day; 10 December, Constitution Day; and 31 December, New Year's Eve. Government offices and banks close on these days. This year 5 December falls on a Saturday, so the first weekend of the month will be busy with Thai travellers, especially around Pattaya, where Wonderfruit is running at the same time.

1. Bangkok Art Biennale 2026

The fifth Bangkok Art Biennale runs for four months under the theme "Angels & Mara", looking at the pull between light and darkness, hope and despair, virtue and temptation. Artistic director Apinan Poshyananda and his curatorial team place contemporary works in heritage settings, including temples such as Wat Arun, as well as in museums and public spaces around the city. Artists announced so far include Yasumasa Morimura, Nobuyoshi Araki, Pierre & Gilles and Mel Chin.

Because the works are spread across Bangkok, the biennale is easiest to take in a few venues at a time, combined with sightseeing in the same neighbourhood. Temple venues keep their usual dress code, so cover shoulders and knees.

2. Vijit Chao Phraya 2026

Vijit Chao Phraya turns riverside landmarks into a nightly display of lighting, projection mapping and sky shows. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects the 2026 edition to run for about a month from mid-November, but the list of landmarks, the nightly show times and the dates of any fireworks or drone displays had not been published when we last checked.

For a sense of scale, the 2025 edition ran for 45 nights at 15 locations and closed on 23 December 2025. It took place during the national mourning period for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, and used drone shows in place of fireworks. The displays read best after dark, from an evening river cruise or from riverside parks and piers.

3. Winter garden festivals in Northern Thailand

Two annual garden festivals make use of the cool season in the north. Neither had announced its 2026 dates when we last checked, so the dates below are from last season and give a guide to when to expect them.

Flora Festival, Royal Park Rajapruek (Chiang Mai)

The Flora Festival is Royal Park Rajapruek's main annual event: large seasonal flower displays grown by highland farmers, alongside talks, workshops, cultural performances and a hill-tribe market. Last season's December programme included a week dedicated to orchids and festive light displays for the New Year.

Colors of Doi Tung (Chiang Rai)

Run by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation, Colors of Doi Tung fills Mae Fah Luang Garden with flower beds laid out in the patterns of hill-tribe textiles and adds a walking street selling food and handmade products from six hill-tribe communities. Last season's programme also included craft workshops, cultural performances, a "Jazz in the Garden" concert and viewing nights for the Geminids meteor shower.

4. River Kwai Bridge Week, Kanchanaburi

Every year Kanchanaburi marks the history of the Death Railway, built during the Second World War by Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers, with a festival at the River Kwai Bridge. The centrepiece is an evening light, sound and fireworks show on the river that retells the wartime story. Around it run the provincial Red Cross fair, food stalls, local products and a small funfair.

Kanchanaburi is about 130 km from Bangkok. Because the festival starts in late November and ends on 5 December, it suits travellers arriving at the very start of the month, and it pairs well with a visit to the war cemeteries and museums near the bridge.

5. Wonderfruit

Wonderfruit is a five-day gathering of music, art, talks, wellness and food that has taken place outside Pattaya every December since 2014. The 2026 edition, the first of its second decade, is built around three themes: mind, nature and sound. Most guests stay on site in tents or cabins, and general camping opens at 4pm on Thursday 3 December.

Unlike the large dance-music festivals later in the month, Wonderfruit is designed for all ages, with family passes and programming for children and teenagers. Keep in mind that the 5 December public holiday falls in the middle of the festival and that Tomorrowland takes place in the same province a week later, so hotels around Pattaya fill early in the first half of December.

6. Tomorrowland Thailand

Tomorrowland Thailand is the Belgian festival's first full-scale edition in Asia, announced by the Tourism Authority of Thailand for 11–13 December 2026 at Wisdom Valley, a large outdoor site near Pattaya. The festival will have six stages, including the Mainstage and the CORE and Freedom stages, under this year's "Consciencia" theme. There is no camping; hotel packages with shuttle transfers were sold alongside the festival passes.

How much do tickets cost? At launch, a one-day pass cost 5,100 THB and a three-day Full Madness Pass 12,500 THB, with the three-day Comfort (VIP) pass at around 20,200 THB. All official passes and hotel packages have since sold out. If you don't have a ticket, follow Tomorrowland's official channels for any re-release and avoid unofficial sellers.

Even if you are not going, the festival affects travel: expect busier roads and fuller hotels around Pattaya and the rest of Chonburi that weekend.

7. Red Cross Fair, Lumpini Park

The Thai Red Cross Society's annual fair has been part of Bangkok life for more than a century and raises money for the society's charitable work. For around 11 to 12 days, Lumpini Park fills with food stalls, fairground games, lucky draws, Red Cross lottery tickets, royal project booths and cultural performances, open from late morning into the evening. In both 2024 and 2025 the fair opened on 11 December.

It is mainly a local event, which is much of its appeal. The park is easy to reach by BTS (Sala Daeng or Ratchadamri stations) and MRT (Silom or Lumphini stations). The 2026 dates had not been announced when we last checked.

8. Big Mountain Music Festival

Big Mountain is one of Thailand's largest music festivals. This year, organiser GMM Show moves it to a new site at Farm Chokchai 3 in Khao Yai under a new format, Big Mountain Music Village, with more than 100 artists, most of them Thai, performing across several stages over two days. Many festivalgoers camp on site for the weekend.

Most of the audience is Thai. For other visitors to Khao Yai that weekend, the practical point is accommodation: expect strong demand for rooms in the area on 12–13 December.

9. EDC Thailand

When and where is EDC Thailand 2026? The third Thai edition of Electric Daisy Carnival takes place on 18–20 December 2026 at Rhythm Park in Phuket, a purpose-built venue in the Laguna area of Thalang district. The festival previously ran in January; the organisers moved it to December to line up with year-end holidays and the start of Phuket's peak season.

Prices rise as each tier sells out, so check the official ticket page for the current price. An All-Access Experience Pass add-on covers the Thursday opening beach party and the daytime parties over the weekend, and Hotel EDC packages are based at Angsana Laguna Phuket. EDC falls one week after Tomorrowland, so fans planning both should allow time to travel from Pattaya to Phuket.

10. Christmas Star Parade, Sakon Nakhon

Tha Rae, beside Nong Han Lake in northeastern Thailand, is home to the country's largest Roman Catholic community, which traces its roots to Vietnamese Catholic families who settled here in the 1880s. For more than a century the community has marked Christmas Eve with a procession of illuminated stars, which has grown into a parade of star-shaped floats through the town.

TAT now promotes the parade as one of its signature festivals and lists it on its December 2026 events programme. In 2025 the celebrations ran over five days, from 20 to 24 December, with light installations and drone shows around St Michael's Cathedral. Sakon Nakhon is about an hour's flight from Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport.

11. New Year's Eve countdowns

Bangkok's largest countdown takes place over the Chao Phraya River. For the last New Year, the Amazing Thailand Countdown ran from 27 to 31 December at ICONSIAM, with other large countdown events at CentralWorld and One Bangkok, and celebrations in cities around the country. Programmes for the countdown to 2027 had not been announced when we last checked.

Crowds around the main riverside sites are very large. A dinner cruise or a riverside restaurant table booked well in advance is a calmer way to see the fireworks.

Planning a trip around December's events

December is high season in Thailand, and this year's events concentrate demand in a few places at specific times:

• Pattaya and Chonburi, 3–13 December: Wonderfruit, the 5 December holiday weekend and Tomorrowland follow one another. Book hotels early and allow extra time on the road from Bangkok.
• Khao Yai, 12–13 December: Big Mountain brings a large domestic crowd to the area.
• Phuket, 18–20 December: EDC Thailand coincides with the start of Phuket's peak season, particularly around Laguna and Bang Tao.
• Christmas to New Year: Demand for hotels and domestic flights is high across Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the islands, so confirm rooms and flights early.
