1. Where Is Chiang Mai?

Located 800 km north of Bangkok, about a nine-hour drive away, this ancient city served as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom for nearly seven hundred years, from the late thirteenth century to the late eighteenth. Back to the present, it is Thailand's second-largest province, often called the "Capital of the North",  and an excellent base for exploring natural beauty combined with cultural treasures in the northern Thailand.

The city has so much to offer, including ancient temples, crazy night markets, and an abundance of cooking classes. Some of the active types include hiking, ziplining, and elephant sanctuaries. The city also has a vibrant art scene. Chiang Mai also boasts a thriving art scene, numerous cafes, and a variety of dining options.

2. When Are The Best Times To Visit Chiang Mai?

Due to its altitude, Chiang Mai is noticeably cooler than most other cities in Thailand. Chiang Mai offers a varied weather experience, typical of the tropical savannah of Southeast Asia, with three distinct seasons.

Chiang Mai has quite diverse and rich weather
  • Chiang Mai during the dry season

During the hot season, which lasts from March to June, temperatures usually stay above 30 degrees Celsius, sometimes extending into November.

March is particularly challenging due to the smoke from farmers burning fields. This creates a haze that shrouds the landscape and fills the air with soot. The sky is generally gray, and the fire smell surrounds the region, which makes this period awful. However, if you are visiting Chiang Mai during this period, please check the local press when there is more news about what steps were taken by the government to solve these problems.

  • Chiang Mai during the rainy season

From July to October, the rainy season turns the city into a lush, green paradise with refreshing showers. Nature flourishes, creating beautiful landscapes. However, it's important to follow the weather forecast regularly due to the risk of slips and landslides. This period is ideal for leisurely travel but less suitable for trekking.

  • Chiang Mai in the cool season

The cool season from October to February is the perfect time to explore Chiang Mai. With mild temperatures ranging from 15 to 31°C, the comfortable climate invites visitors to discover the city's many attractions.

Every year, from late December to January, Chiang Mai is adorned with stunning cherry blossoms that blanket its roads and mountains.

3. How To Get There?

  • By plane

From Bangkok, it is easy to get to Chiang Mai by air; the quickest flight only takes 60–70 minutes. The route is served by airlines such as AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai VietJet, Thai Lion Air, and Thai Airways, with exclusivity with Bangkok Airways.

Fares differ, but the likes of AirAsia and Nok are sure to be available for as little as 900 baht ($24). From Chiang Mai Airport, you can catch a taxi or take bus number 4 to the city center.

  • By train

Another popular mode of travel from Bangkok to the north—or vice versa—is by train. A journey from the capital, Bangkok (Hua Lamphong Station), to Chiang Mai could take anywhere between 11 and 14 hours. Taking overnight trains is a good idea when it comes to avoiding hotel costs.

Prices will be different; for example, the first class (around 1,000 baht), the second class, and the third class (between 600 and 700 baht). Trains leave from the central station in Bangkok and arrive at Chiang Mai's main terminal, which is about 3.7 km away from the old city.

  • By local bus

For a budget-friendly alternative to the train, consider taking a local bus. Standard or express buses take about 10-11 hours and cost around 700 baht. Recommended companies include Bangkok Bus Line and Sombat Tour. Prices and schedules can vary, so check details when booking.

4. What To Do & What To See In Chiang Mai?

  • The old quarters

As the title indicates, this is Old Chiang Mai. The city was once absorbed by the Lan Na Empire, which is said to be one of Thailand's ancient kingdoms. High walls enclose the old city area. The principal gate is Tha Pae (in the east of the old city area). The interior of the old buildings has lovely cafes nestled among them, adding a rustic feel to this place. Its old structures have been given new lives as charming restaurants. But these 15th-century temples are still in place!

Visit interesting temples such as Wat Chiang Man and Wat Chedi Luang, in addition to numerous museums like the elegant Chiang Mai City Art and Culture Center and Lan Na Architectural Museum, in addition to the 3 Kings Monument, which looks like a square.

  • Chiang Mai night markets and shopping

Chiang Mai, Thailand’s vibrant second city, invites travelers to experience its bustling Night Bazaar, renowned for lively streets and unique shopping. Explore eclectic neighborhoods by day and savor Asia's finest street food by night. Travelers can indulge in herbal massage sessions or wander through night markets to shop for Thai souvenirs and savor street food, considered some of the best in Asia.

  • The sacred temples

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, the most famous temple in Chiang Mai

A temple that dates back to 1383 and sits more than nearly 1,000 meters above sea level in Doi Suthep National Park is just over seven miles from town. The funicular will take you up to it, or a further 309 stairs are lined with Naga, dragon-headed serpents.

On the terraces of Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, there are several small shrines, including pagodas, bells, and a statue of the Emerald Buddha, as well as one wearing the Hindu god Ganesh (a gift from Philip Bissell Webb); this should have supplanted the previous Ashokan-Stella offering embedded in the 1960s. Estimates indicate nothing stating that the divine white elephant showed up to pick up "chedi" sacred symbols. From this Buddhist stupa, the panoramic view of the entire Chiang Mai countryside is breathtaking.

The temple offers travelers the opportunity to practice Vipassana meditation during retreats that vary in duration, ranging from 4 to 21 days.

And other temples to visit:

  • Wat Chedi Luang: An imposing monument built from the 14th to the 16th century, it housed 28,000 relics of the Buddha.
  • Wat Phra Singh: Built in 1345, it houses the revered statue of Buddha Phra Singh, 16th-century images of the Buddha, typical wall paintings, and a library with ancient manuscripts and chedis dating from 1345.

  • Wat Chiang Mai: Dating back to 1296, this temple, the oldest in Chiang Mai, is renowned for its stupa surrounded by hand-carved elephants and its chapel containing unique images of the Buddha, Phra Sila, and Phra Sae Tang Khamani, often paraded during the Songkran festival.

  • Doi Inthanon National Park

Doi Inthanon, known as "The Roof of Thailand," stands as the peak in the country, showcasing views. This national park boasts an array of scenery, including splendid waterfalls like the Wachirathan Falls and the splendid Mae Ya Falls.

For those who love hiking, trails such as the Kew Mae Pan Trail offer awe-inspiring vistas of mountain ranges. One of the sights is witnessing a sea of clouds stretching across the valley below from this summit, which marks the highest spot in Thailand.

  • Doi Suthep National Park

Compared to Doi Inthanon Park, Doi Suthep is known for its focus on sites like Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. The panoramic view from this temple overlooking the Chiang Mai countryside is truly awe-inspiring.

At Doi Suthep, the Naga staircase and the exploration of Karen villages, a tribe residing on the Thailand-Malaysia border, contribute to its popularity. Travelers visiting the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep temple have the chance to join Vipassana meditation retreats ranging from four to 21 days.

  • Elephant Camp

In recent times, there has been a growing awareness of the mistreatment of elephants used in illicit logging and tourism. However, in the Chiang Mai region, these majestic creatures are highly revered, leading to the establishment of sanctuaries dedicated to their well-being and preservation. It is highly recommended to visit these elephant sanctuaries when exploring Thailand. Various locations offer experiences such as walking with elephants, feeding them, and participating in activities like bathing.

Some of the most renowned and respected sanctuaries for these magnificent creatures include Elephant Nature Park, home to about 35 elephants, Eco Kerchor Park with six dedicated elephants, and Kanta Elephant Sanctuary.

  • Ban Pa Pong Piang Rice Terraces

Nestled inside Doi Inthanon National Park, Chiang Mai, Ban Pa Pong Piang’s breathtaking rice terraces present one of Thailand’s most photogenic landscapes. These verdant terraces bounded by tropical rainforests stretch as far as one can see and are very popular among many travelers looking for authenticity off the beaten track.

Rice terraces extend endlessly, forming a sweeping green vista

Access to these beautiful rice fields is a bit more involved, but that is part of its charm as an unspoiled destination. For this reason, it is better to book a private transfer from Chiang Mai if you want to visit these rice fields because, unlike other means, it will allow flexibility and comfort on the picturesque mountainous roads leading to your final destination.

Once in any of those options, however, you will be able to fully appreciate how isolated Pa Pong Piang is away from the tourist crowds.

  • Thrills guaranteed on a motorbike

To explore the beautiful places around Chiang Mai, you should consider renting a motorbike. Taking you through jungly mountains is an unbeatable experience of budding freedom. This way, you are just a few meters away from hidden waterfalls, local villages, and secluded temples.

Getting a motorbike rental agency in Chiang Mai is very simple. A lot of hotels and guesthouses will provide this facility to their guests. The presentation of your passport, and international driver’s license, and payment of 1000 baht as a deposit will do for most agencies. In addition to that, they also offer discounts during off-peak seasons or when hiring for several days. You can choose from many different types of scooters, such as automatic or manual transmission bikes, trail models if you go on dirt roads, etc.
