Trang An, Vietnam: 8 Tips to Avoid Crowds and Confusion

Trang An is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Ninh Binh, but its massive popularity comes with a price: crowds. If you are asking yourself, "Is it worth visiting Trang An?" or "How do I avoid the tour buses?", you have come to the right place.

Unlike typical travel guides that simply list the routes, I will not do that. Drawing from my 7 years of experience guiding in Northern Vietnam included Trang An, I will share a specific "Cheat Sheet" on how to combine routes to get the best of both worlds: peaceful nature and historic temples, without getting stuck in a "human traffic jam".

So, don't book your boat ticket until you check Section 5 and 9. I reveal a negotiation tip with the boatmen that most tourists miss!

    1. Where is Trang An?

Officially named the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, this site is often called "Halong Bay on Land". It is about 7 kilometers from the heart of Ninh Binh and 90 kilometers (a 2-hour drive) from Hanoi, the capital. But geologically, it is even older and structurally more complex.

It is vital to understand the history of Trang An. Recognized in 2014, it is Vietnam's first and only mixed natural and cultural property. The karst mountains here were formed over 250 million years ago, preserving traces of prehistoric humans from 30,000 years ago.

From my point of view, when you visit, you are not just seeing mountains; you are exploring a natural fortress. In the 10th century, King Dinh Tien Hoang chose this spot because the limestone peaks acted as "impenetrable walls" and the rivers served as "roads" to protect the capital from invaders. Later, the Tran Dynasty used these same caves as a secret military base to defeat the Mongols in the 13th century. In more recent history, these caves even served as a strategic shelter during conflicts as recent as the Vietnam War.

    3. Trang An or Tam Coc? We Did Both So You Don’t Have To

To better choose between Trang An and Tam Coc, here is a comparison of the two sites:

    Criteria Trang An Tam Coc
Landscape Limestone mountains, numerous caves, intertwined rivers, temples and historical remains. Three large caves (Hang Ca, Hang Hai, Hang Ba), green rice fields surrounded by limestone mountains.
Cultural and historical experience Richer in heritage with sacred temples and archaeological sites. Fewer cultural and historical elements along the route.
Activities Boat ride + possibility to go kayaking. Boat trip only.
Duration of the boat tour 2.5 to 3 hours. 1.5 to 2 hours.
Popularity Less touristy, more peaceful atmosphere. More crowded, especially in high season.

    In short:

    • For a longer, more varied, and history-rich experience, Trang An would be ideal.
    • If ticking off a shorter trip through rice fields and mountains is on your wish list, then Tam Coc is recommended.
    • If you want to avoid crowds, then Trang An is generally quieter than Tam Coc.

    🏆 Good to know:

Three attractions in Ninh Binh: Trang An, Tam Coc - Bich Dong and Bai Dinh Pagoda, have been recognised in TripAdvisor’s 2025 Travellers’ Choice Awards. Trang An was named “Best of the Best”, placing it among the world’s top 1% destinations.

    4. What to See and Do in Trang An

There are many beautiful caves in Trang An, each offering its own legend of charm.

    • The Dark Cave is approximately 320 meters long and is shaped in a winding configuration that prohibits light entry, creating a mystical atmosphere. Just after it, the Cave of Light stretches 100 meters long. Although the name means "shining cave," it remains in darkness without artificial lighting dazzling its dramatic rock formations.
    • The Alcohol Distilling Cave is a source of pure underground water, which once served in the production of alcohol so pure that it was meant for the Vietnamese monarchs.

    • The Cave of the Three Drops, as its name suggests, is famous for its stalactites, which are said to always drip water. According to local belief, those who can catch three drops of water from this stalactite will be rewarded with good luck and happiness in their lives.
    • The almost 300-meter-long Jewel Cave is characterized by glistening stalactites that reflect a natural treasure hidden within.
    • Lastly, Hang Đột is the longest cave in Trang An, with a total length of more than 1,000 meters. Its ceiling is lofty and well-ventilated, giving visitors a fresh sensation while crossing the cave by boat for around 30 minutes.
The stalactites in the Trang An Caves are completely natural and date back to the 7th century.

    Discover Sacred Temples

    • Most of the temples located in the lower regions of a mountain pay tribute to the loyal ministers who served the Đinh dynasty in the 10th century, managing royal finances and playing an important role in the defense of the kingdom.
    • Trần Temple, founded by King Đinh and renovated during the Trần Dynasty, is dedicated to the guardian god of the ancient capital. Every year, on March 18 of the lunar calendar, a festival is celebrated there, attracting many visitors.
    • Khống Shrine (Phủ Khống) is a place steeped in history, very close to Khống Cave. It commemorates the loyal ministers of the Đinh Dynasty, who are said to have sacrificed their lives to preserve the secret of the royal tomb. This cave was also a strategic refuge during the wars of resistance.
    • Hanh Cung Vu Lam Temple is accessible solely by water and is found amidst thick mountains and forests. It was a critical military center during the Mongolian invasions while also functioning as a monastic retreat for several kings of the Trần Dynasty, thereby marking a significant milestone in the history of Buddhism in Vietnam.

    Experience Kayaking Adventure

At Trang An, you can replace the traditional rowboat with a kayak tour. That way, you'll be able to enjoy the site's beauty at your own pace. Paddling the São Khê River brings total immersion in nature: The routes range from 5 to 8 km. It is also the route where you can admire several temples and historical sites like Trình Temple and Hanh Cung Vu Lam. Adventure lovers and the physically ambitious will find the experience a novel feature of visiting Trang An.

The kayak rental costs between 250,000 and 400,000 VND, depending on the type of boat (solo or duo) and the duration of the tour (2 or 3 hours).

5.1. Which route is best in Trang An?

In all 4 boat routes in Trang An, each route has a different appeal, but to choose the best route, you must rely on your purpose and needs.

    • The first route lets you explore the full number of caves and temples, but the duration is quite long; if you have children with you or do not have much time, this route may not meet your needs.
    • The second route offers shorter activities but still allows you to visit a variety of caves and temples.
    • The third route (2017) and the Phoenix Route (2023) are the two newest routes, and these two routes are suitable for tourists who like to explore new places and want to enjoy the natural landscape and historical relics.
The most worth-going route in Trang An is route 2 and 3.

5.2. Oliver’s "Cheat Sheet" (Insider Secret)

Here is the secret that most travel agencies won't tell you. You don't have to strictly stick to one route if you know how to ask.

The "Hybrid" Strategy: I personally find Route 2 best for the outbound journey (scenic temples) and Route 3 best for the return journey (the spectacular 1000m cave).

    So, how did I do?

    1. First things first, buy a ticket for Route 2 or 3.
    2. Then, when you board the boat, smile and use Google Translate to tell the rower: "Can we go Route 2 on the way out and Route 3 on the way back?" (Vietnamese: "Chị ơi, đi chiều đi tuyến 2, chiều về tuyến 3 được không ạ?") (You can learn some Vietnamese sentences here!)
    3. Most rowers are happy to do this as the routes intersect. A small tip (50,000 - 100,000 VND) at the end will make them very happy for the extra effort.
Oliver's exclusive tips on how to visit Trang An without the crowds
Trust me, this trick of mine will not disappoint you!

    >>> Did you know?

While gliding through the caves, keep an eye on the limestone cliffs and lush branches above. Trang An is one of the few places on earth where you can spot the critically endangered Delacour's Langur (Vọc quần đùi trắng).

I always saw them on Route 2 (near the isolated islands) or late in the afternoon when they come out to eat. Spotting one is considered a sign of good luck!

Try to find luck in your Trang An journey like me!!!

    6. What to Eat in Trang An?

Wondering what to eat in Trang An after your boat trip? Ninh Binh cuisine is famous for two unique dishes that you cannot miss:

    • Mountain Goat Meat (Dê Núi): Unlike goat meat elsewhere, Ninh Binh goats graze freely on limestone mountains, making the meat lean and flavorful. Try it Steamed with Ginger (Dê Tái Chanh) for freshness or Grilled (Dê Nướng) for a smoky taste.
    • Burnt Rice (Cơm Cháy): A crunchy, golden rice cracker often served with a savory dipping sauce made from goat meat gravy. It is the perfect energy booster after 3 hours on a boat.

Oliver's Recommendation: Avoid the big, flashy restaurants right at the boat pier gate (they are often "tourist traps"). Go 1-2km further towards Hoa Lu or Tam Coc. Look for family-run restaurants (signs often say "Nhà Hàng Dê Núi"), where prices are lower and the taste is authentic.

    7. How to get there?

Trang An is located about 95km south of Hanoi. Depending on your budget and travel style, you can choose from the following options. Here is a quick comparison to help you decide:

    • Transport Options Comparison

Mode of transport Duration Est. Cost (One way) Pros Cons
Train  2.5 hours 150,000 - 200,000 VND (~$6-8) Safe, scenic, budget-friendly, slow travel. Stops at Ninh Binh Station, requires a taxi/grab (7km) to Trang An.
Private car 1.5 - 2 Hours 1,200,000+ VND (~$50+) Most comfortable. Flexible schedule, door-to-door service. Higher cost (best to share if traveling in a group).
Limousine Van 2 Hours 250,000 - 350,000 VND (~$10-14) High quality seats, AC, hotel pickup in Hanoi Old Quarter. Fixed schedule, drops off at Ninh Binh center (may need taxi to pier).
Motorbike 2.5 - 3 Hours ~150,000 VND (Rental/day) Total freedom, adventurous. Need IDP (1968), traffic risks, tiring for beginners.
    • By train

You can reach Trang An by taking a train from Hanoi Railway Station to Ninh Binh Railway Station, and then continue by taxi or motorbike for the last 7km. The journey takes just over 2 hours. For more information, check out our article about train travel in Vietnam.

    9. Bonus: Visiting Trang An on a Budget

You don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy this UNESCO site. Here is how to experience Trang An on a budget:

    • Rent a Motorbike: Instead of hiring a private car or taxi for the whole day, rent a motorbike from Ninh Binh Railway Station or your hostel (~150,000 VND/day). It gives you total freedom at a fraction of the cost.
    • Use Ride-Hailing Apps (Grab): If you can't drive, download the Grab app. It is often 20-30% cheaper than traditional taxis and you know the price in advance. For solo travelers, booking a "Grab Bike" (motorbike taxi) is the cheapest way to move between caves.
    • Look for "Easy Riders": In Ninh Binh, local motorbike drivers (often wearing blue shirts) offer rides between attractions.
    • Bring Your Own Supplies: Water and snacks inside the complex are sold at tourist prices (often double or triple). Pack a reusable water bottle and some Banh Mi from the town center before entering.
    • Strategic Timing: To save on transport, group nearby sites. For example, combine Trang An (Early Morning) + Hoa Lu (Noon) + Mua Cave (Sunset) in one day so you don't pay for multiple trips back and forth from your hotel.

    10. FAQs

How long does it take to visit Trang An?

n Ninh Binh that are worth visiting within half a day:

📌 Our advice: Most travelers combine Trang An with Bai Dinh Pagoda and Tam Coc with Bich Dong Temple and Mua Cave.

Should I tip the boat rower?

It is not mandatory, but highly appreciated. These rowers (mostly local women) work hard physically for 3 hours. A tip of 50,000 - 100,000 VND (~$2 - $4) per boat is a kind gesture.

We’re a family of four adults visiting Hanoi in mid-March and planning a day trip to Ninh Binh. We were initially leaning toward Tam Coc because it seems quieter, but it looks like this may not be the ideal season for the rice paddies, so now we’re considering Trang An, route 2. We’re also hoping for a low-key, more personalized experience possibly by hiring a private car. Should we arrange this in advance, or is it better to book through our hotel once we arrive?

    Hi Mathew!

Mid-March is a lovely time to visit Ninh Binh. You are correct that Tam Coc will not have green or golden rice fields at that time. For scenery, Trang An (especially Route 2) is a very good choice. The water is calm, the caves are impressive, and the landscape is beautiful throughout the year.

If you still want a peaceful atmosphere, you can stay in Tam Coc and take a short taxi or Grab ride to the Trang An boat pier. It is very convenient for families.

For a low-key and more personalized experience, hiring a private car is the best option. You can book it in advance for peace of mind, especially because mid-March is a busy travel period. If your schedule is flexible, most hotels in Hanoi can also arrange a private car the day before. It is simple and commonly done.

    To summarize:

    • Trang An Route 2 is a great choice for mid-March.

    • Tam Coc is still a pleasant base even without the rice season.

    • A private car can be booked in advance or through your hotel. Booking early usually gives you better rates and more reliable service.

If you need help with the itinerary or choosing a driver, feel free to ask.

Hello, you can totally enjoy the scenery without entering the caves. In Tràng An, it is enough to ask the boatman not to make the boat pass through passages that are too narrow or dark.

Alternatively, a good alternative is Tam Coc, also located in Ninh Binh Land Bay. The experience takes place mostly outdoors, with far fewer passages under the caves. Again, you can tell the rower to keep the boat only outside. Good trip.
