Ninh Binh Travel Guide: 6 Essential Tips For First-Time Travelers
Ninh Binh, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a stunning destination in Northern Vietnam that rivals the natural and cultural beauty of the famous Halong Bay.
The word "majestic" perfectly captures this region, with its breathtaking landscapes that will leave you speechless. Picture limestone mountains, winding rivers, natural caves, and lotus fields, all creating scenes reminiscent of surreal paintings. Follow our guide to make the most of your visit to this fascinating region!
1. Ninh Binh: A Spectacular Destination in Northern Vietnam
Nicknamed "Halong Bay on land," Ninh Binh is located about 90 km south of Hanoi, a 1.5- to 2-hour drive away. This northern Vietnamese region boasts magnificent landscapes, imperial history, religious culture, and archaeological and geological treasures.
Situated in the Red River Delta, the Trang A landscape complex features spectacular karst peaks, crisscrossed valleys, some submerged, and steep, almost vertical cliffs. In addition, UNESCO designated Ninh Binh as a World Heritage Site in 2014, celebrating it for its exceptional natural and cultural landscape.
Ninh Binh, Vietnam is also a historical hotspot, home to Hoa Lu, Vietnam's ancient capital in the 10th and 11th centuries. The region is rich with temples, pagodas, and other sacred sites.
2.Things To Do In Ninh Binh
-
Trang An complex and its region
Trang An Complex is a must-visit destination in Ninh Binh. Its limestone formations, shaped by waterways, green valleys, and rice terraces, create a spectacular landscape. This stunning location has been featured in famous films like "Indochine" and "Kong: Skull Island." To truly immerse yourself, I recommend exploring by bike and boat for an unforgettable experience.
You can discover numerous caves nestled in the karst cliffs and capture stunning photos of the rice fields below. For a more leisurely experience, consider a sampan ride. This traditional small boat, maneuvered by rowers using their feet, allows you to soak in the beauty of Trang An at a relaxed pace.
-
Tam Coc and its hidden caves
Ninh Binh is renowned for its stunning landscapes of limestone peaks rising from verdant rice fields, reminiscent of the famous Halong Bay. However, in Ninh Binh, these peaks are set inland, with the Ngo Dong River winding through the mountains and valleys, offering breathtaking views of this unique scenery.
Tam Coc, which means "three caves," features the Hang Ca, Hang Giua, and Hang Ba caves formed by rock erosion. Our guide-rower took us through these caves, some of which conceal hidden lakes accessed through small entrances. You have to duck to avoid hitting ancient stalactites, making the journey in the curved boat quite amusing.
The starting point for exploring Tam Coc is conveniently located in the city's heart. A two-hour boat ride lets you admire the splendor of this terrestrial Halong Bay. Enjoy the tranquility, fresh air, and sunshine while immersing yourself in the surrounding nature during this serene ride.

Bich Dong pagoda
Cycling along small paths, you'll pass through charming hamlets that capture the authentic rural atmosphere of Vietnam, leading you to the Bich Dong Pagoda. This pagoda, meaning "pagoda in the Jade Cave," is an architectural marvel nestled on the side of a steep, jungle-covered mountain.
Legend has it that around 1705, two monks built three small pavilions here, believing this land to be the heart of five mountains forming lotus petals. The panoramic view from the top, overlooking an endless field of reeds, makes the journey worthwhile. This exceptional spot also served as a filming location for the movie "Indochina."

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoa Lư is renowned for its annual festivals that attract thousands of visitors. The Hoa Lư Festival, held from the 9th to the 11th day of the third lunar month, commemorates Dinh Bo Linh, the founder of Vietnam's ancient state in the 10th century. The celebrations include processions, offerings, traditional performances, games, and other cultural and religious activities.
-
Van Long Flooded Forest
Van Long Nature Reserve is an ecological gem, home to rare bird species nesting along the lush riverbanks. It’s a must-see during your trip to Vietnam. Just north of Trang An, Van Long is the largest submerged nature reserve in northern Vietnam.
This ornithological paradise attracts all nature lovers with its hundreds of bird species, including egrets, herons, night herons, rails, and long-tailed jacanas. A superb rowing boat ride offers a grand view of this natural site, with several caves to explore: Hang Ca (Fish Cave), Hang Bông (Balloon Cave), Hang Rùa (Turtle Cave), and Hang Chanh (Lemon Cave). As you sail through the calm waters, you'll witness enchanting landscapes of karst hills reflected on the water.
-
Cuc Phuong National Park
Located about forty kilometers from Ninh Binh, Cuc Phuong National Park is Vietnam’s first and largest national park. This stunning sanctuary is home to a vast array of flora and fauna, including over 2000 plant species, 122 reptile and amphibian species, 65 fish species, nearly 2000 insect species, and 133 mammal species.
From November to April, the park is filled with thousands of colorful butterflies fluttering over the lush flowers and plants. Visitors can walk through forest trails, enjoying the sight of these butterflies and the beauty of nature.
Cuc Phuong also has significant archaeological importance, with evidence of human habitation dating back 7,000 to 12,000 years. Artifacts from this period have been found in many of the park's caves.
-
Phat Diem Cathedral
The region is the birthplace of Vietnamese Catholicism, with Phat Diem Cathedral being the largest Catholic architectural complex in Vietnam. Built in 1891 by Father Pierre Tran Luc, also known as Father Six, this historic cathedral is at the heart of Ninh Binh and is 130 years old.
The cathedral complex features about ten stone and wooden structures, blending the architectural styles of Buddhist pagodas and Catholic churches. In 1988, it was designated as a cultural and historical monument by the Ministry of Culture.

Located in northern Vietnam, Ninh Binh experiences four distinct seasons:
-
Winter (Late November to Early March)
Winter in the Red River Delta is marked by humidity, low temperatures, and light drizzle, though occasional sunny days do occur.
-
Spring (Early March to Late April)
Spring brings rising temperatures and increasing sunshine, making it a lovely time to visit.
-

5. When Are The Best Times To Visit?
To fully appreciate this magnificent region, visit when the rice has been planted. Transplanting begins in February after the winter months, with the first harvest in late May and the second in late September. During these times, the landscapes are most spectacular, as the rice fields turn a vibrant yellow just before harvest.
Be mindful of the Tet festivities, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, which occurs from late January to mid-February, varying by year. During Tet, many Vietnamese families visit Ninh Binh, making the main tourist sites crowded and accommodation harder to find.
The best time to visit Ninh Binh is from April to June. This season is less crowded and coincides with the lotus bloom and rice harvest, creating stunning landscapes with rolling rice fields and majestic lotus flowers on the water. Remember to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during this time.
