1. Overview Of Vietnam’s Airports

As of now, Vietnam boasts a total of 22 operational airports, with 10 designated as international hubs. The management of these airports falls under the purview of the Airports Corporation in Vietnam.

For travelers eyeing Vietnam as their next destination, it's crucial to note that the top three major international arrival Vietnam airports are Noi Bai in Hanoi (located in the north), Da Nang (situated in the center), and Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City (positioned in the south). Moreover, other international airports also facilitate direct flights to popular tourist destinations within the country.

Various airlines in Vietnam cater to both international and domestic routes. Among them are Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways, and Vietravel Airlines. Each of these carriers maintains an official website where travelers can peruse flight schedules, compare prices, and explore in-flight amenities.

To ensure a seamless journey by air, it's advisable to secure your plane tickets well in advance, particularly for international and domestic flights. This approach allows for convenient scheduling, comfortable seating arrangements for longer trips, and reasonable fare rates. Keep in mind that ticket prices might surge during public holidays.

Additionally, it's prudent to stay updated on flight schedules, as they are subject to change based on airline operations. Regularly monitoring this information will help prevent any mishaps and ensure you don't miss your flight.

2. International Airports: Which Airport To Choose To Visit Vietnam?

Out of Vietnam's 10 international airports, Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam and Noi Bai in Hanoi steal the spotlight among foreign tourists. These two hubs are well-known for the widest range of international and domestic flight options, making them the top choices for travelers.

2.1 Hanoi Airport - Noi Bai international airport (HAN)

Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi)
Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi)
  • Overview

Hanoi Airport, known as "Noi Bai International Airport," sits about 30 km north of Hanoi's bustling city center, roughly a 45-minute drive away. As the primary gateway to the north of Vietnam and the sole airport serving Hanoi, Noi Bai attracts a steady stream of travelers beginning their Vietnamese adventure here. Managed by the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), this aviation hub, nestled in Soc Son district, serves as the main base for major airlines like Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airlines, and Air Mekong. Currently, Noi Bai International Airport handles a hefty load, welcoming over 28 million passengers annually.

At Noi Bai, modern conveniences abound to cater to travelers' needs, from shopping to dining and relaxation, thanks to its state-of-the-art facilities.

Noi Bai Airport operates with two terminals: one for domestic flights and another for international journeys. The international terminal, inaugurated in 2015, stands as a beacon of modernity. Situated approximately 1,500 meters from its domestic counterpart, the airport provides complimentary shuttles shuttling passengers between the two terminals every 15 minutes.

  • Flights operated

In addition to the five domestic carriers, approximately 22 international airlines operate flights to and from Noi Bai Airport, offering convenient connections to sought-after destinations across Asia, Europe, and beyond. Among the most favored airlines are Air Asia, Emirates, Qatar Airways, China Airlines, Thai Airways, Japan Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.

For domestic travel, with the exception of Hai Phong and Van Don, Noi Bai Airport facilitates flights to all other domestic airports within Vietnam.

  • Airport-city center transfer

The transfer between the airport and the city center takes approximately 45 minutes. The most convenient method of transportation is a taxi, which will drop you off directly at your hotel for a cost of approximately USD 15-18. Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, or Jetstar also offer shuttles at a reasonable price (around $2 per person one way), but their frequency is quite random. Alternatively, shuttle services are reasonably priced (around $2 per passenger one way) and offered by Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, or Jetstar, albeit their timings can be a little erratic.

Taking bus #86, which runs every day from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. for 45,000 VND (about $1.50), is another option. Local buses are inexpensive; however, they may be crowded and not the best option for people with heavy bags.

2.2 Ho Chi Minh airport - Tan Son Nhat international airport (SGN)

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City)
Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City)
  • Overview

Located in the southern reaches of Vietnam, roughly 2000 km from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City stands tall as the bustling metropolis of the south and the nation's largest urban hub. For both locals and visitors alike, navigating to and from this vibrant city, once known as Saigon, primarily unfolds through the wings of an airplane.

Serving as the singular aerial international gateway in the south, Ho Chi Minh Airport, fondly dubbed "Tan Son Nhat International Airport," buzzes with activity as the country's busiest air hub. Unlike its counterparts, which often perch on the outskirts of urban landscapes, Tan Son Nhat nestles right within the city's heart, merely 8 kilometers from downtown. Yet, amidst the city's lively traffic, the journey from airport to center typically clocks in at around 30 minutes like Noi Bai.

Tan Son Nhat Airport stands as the indispensable portal for travelers keen on exploring the city's dynamic streets or venturing southward to the sprawling Mekong Delta, a mere three-hour drive away. Helmed by the Vietnam Airlines Corporation (ACV), this airport serves as a pivotal transit hub for the entire southern region. Among its many routes, the Ho Chi Minh City-Hanoi corridor not only ranks as Vietnam's busiest but also shines as a beacon of air traffic across Southeast Asia.

Spanning more than 150,000 square meters, the international terminal boasts a capacity to welcome over 10 million passengers annually, alongside its domestic counterpart. Seamlessly connected by a complimentary shuttle service, ferrying passengers every 10 to 15 minutes, and complemented by covered pedestrian walkways, Tan Son Nhat Airport ensures smooth transitions for its global guests.

  • Flights operated

All five fleets of Vietnam Airlines cater to both domestic and international flights, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with airports across the country and beyond.

In addition to Vietnam Airlines, a diverse array of 45 international carriers grace the skies of Tan Son Nhat Airport, offering an extensive selection of travel options for passengers. Among these esteemed airlines are Air China, Air France, Hong Kong Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai AirAsia, and many more.

  • Airport-city center transfer

Getting from Tan Son Nhat Airport to the city center typically takes about 30 minutes by taxi, setting you back roughly $6-8. To dodge any hiccups like scams or inflated fares, it's wise to hop onto a taxi booking app like Grab or Gojek. These nifty apps let you snag a ride in advance and even see the fare upfront.

For those eyeing a wallet-friendly ride, local airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, or Jetstar offer shuttle services for about $2 per person, one way. However, keep in mind that these shuttles may not run as frequently as you'd like, similar to the situation at Noi Bai Airport.

Another economical choice is Bus number 109, chugging from Tan Son Nhat Airport straight to 23/9 Park in the heart of the city. Operating daily from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., this bus ride will set you back roughly 50 cents.

If you're planning your first trip to Vietnam, it's crucial to be well-prepared and mindful of the following tips:

  • Prepare your documents: Ensure you have all necessary personal documents and meet visa requirements for entry into Vietnam.
  • Pack your luggage wisely: Familiarize yourself with each airline's rules regarding baggage weight and dimensions to avoid any surprises at check-in.
  • Explore airport services: Airports in Vietnam offer a variety of services, both free and paid. Before utilizing any service, it's wise to check online or inquire with service managers to understand any potential additional charges.

By following these pointers, you can streamline your airport experience and start your Vietnam journey smoothly and stress-free.

The southern highlands seem interesting to me. I'm planning to go to Vietnam next July. Can you recommend an airport in Vietnam to get there? I guess Ho Chi Minh City Airport is the most logical choice for visiting the south? What is the weather usually like during this time? Is it possible to take an elephant ride in this region? THANKS.

Dear Andy,

The southern highlands of Vietnam feature distinct landscapes and cultures compared to other regions of the country. This area is accessible by air from the major cities in Vietnam. Flights are available to Da Lat or Buon Me Thuot from Hanoi, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City, landing at either Da Lat Airport (Lien Khuong) or Buon Me Thuot Airport. For more information on the highlands of Vietnam, please refer to our detailed guide about Vietnam's Airport.

Additionally, in Hanoi, you can visit Quoc Trinh Gold and Silver Company at 27 Ha Trung, which accepts all forms of exchange without any additional fees.

In terms of weather, July marks the rainy season in the south. Although there may be occasional showers, they are typically brief. The remainder of the day is usually cool and sunny. In contrast, the northern region experiences summer temperatures ranging from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. For more detailed weather information, I recommend reading our article on Vietnam in July.

Should you require any further information, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely!
