1. Geographical Overview of Phu Quoc and Con Dao

Con Dao is a group of 16 islands in the East Sea, about 230 km from Vietnam's southern coast, near Vung Tau. It's pretty isolated, so you get that 'away from it all' feel. Let’s think about rugged mountains, thick forests, and quiet bays. The water around the islands is super clear and largely untouched - great if you're into diving or checking out marine life.

Phu Quoc, on the other hand, is Vietnam's biggest island. You'll find it in the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 400 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. It almost has everything: 99 mountains, tropical forests, and long stretches of beach. The sea around it is this beautiful sapphire color and usually calm, so it's perfect for all sorts of water activities. Up north, there's even a national park that's on UNESCO's list, which adds to the island's natural beauty.

>>> In a nutshell, Con Dao's more for those who want to get away from it all and experience nature in its raw form. Phu Quoc offers a mix - you've got unspoiled nature, but also more developed areas.

2. Con Dao or Phu Quoc, Which One Is More Accessible?

2.1 How to Get to Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is easily accessible via its international airport, with direct flights from major cities and international destinations including Siem Reap, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Seoul. Airlines such as Vietjet Air and Korean Air frequently serve the island. It is also connected by ferry from Ha Tien and Rach Gia.

Travel Times:

  • By Plane:

    • Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc: ~1 hour

    • Hanoi to Phu Quoc: ~2 hours 10 minutes

  • By Car & Ferry

    • Ho Chi Minh City - Rach Gia - Phu Quoc: ~6-7 hours

    • Ho Chi Minh City - Ha Tien - Phu Quoc: ~8 hours

Good to know: Phu Quoc is the only destination in Vietnam where foreign visitors can stay for up to 30 days without a visa. For more information, please read: Vietnam Visa Exemption

2.2 How to Get to Con Dao

Con Dao is served by a domestic airport with flights from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Can Tho, mainly through Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways. Flights are less frequent compared to Phu Quoc. Ferries from Vung Tau and Can Tho are available but less frequent and weather-dependent.

Travel Times:

  • By Plane:

    • Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao: ~1 hour 15 minutes.

    • Hanoi to Con Dao: ~4-5 hours (including layover in Ho Chi Minh City).

  • By Ferry:

    • Vung Tau to Con Dao: ~3-4 hours.

    • Can Tho to Con Dao: ~5-6 hours.

Overall, Phu Quoc is more easily accessible due to its international airport and frequent flight options, while Con Dao offers a more secluded experience. However, if you prefer to travel by ferry and are starting from Ho Chi Minh City, Con Dao might be a better option since the ferry ride to Con Dao is shorter.

Getting around the islands: Both islands are easy to navigate, with well-maintained roads and affordable, readily available taxis, including ride-hailing apps like Grab and Xanh SM. Motorbikes are also available for rent.
However, Phu Quoc offers something unique that Con Dao lacks: a free, island-wide electric bus network operated by VinBus.

The dry season, which runs from November to April, is when Phu Quoc really shines. This is when you'll see those postcard-perfect beaches with their bright blue water. It's ideal for pretty much any outdoor activity you can think of.

November, in particular, offers mild, pleasant weather. However, this is also the island’s peak tourist season, leading to higher prices and fully booked accommodations.

This place is a water lover's dream.

The diving here is pretty sweet. You can check out some awesome coral reefs and underwater spots. It's like swimming in an aquarium, honestly.

If you're not into diving, no sweat. You can still have a blast kayaking, paddleboarding, or even sailing. The water's so clear you can see fish just swimming around you. It's wild.

More than just enjoying the scenic beauty, fishing and night squid fishing are also popular activities among visitors to Phu Quoc.

5.2 Con Dao:

This beautiful island is famous for its natural splendor. And we believe that’s why water activities here are more focused on the serenity of the environment.

You can indulge in snorkeling and diving in some of Vietnam’s most clear waters, with opportunities to see diverse marine life and coral reefs.

Fishing is a big deal here too, with options that range from traditional squid fishing at night to deep-sea fishing for larger catches. And if you just want to swim, the water's calm and clean. It's like your own private pool, but way better.

To compare, if you're looking for a broader range of activities and a more lively atmosphere, Phu Quoc is the place to go. For a more serene, nature-focused retreat, Con Dao will serve you the ideal escape.

There are also plenty of chill beach bars and night markets. Dinh Cau Market's pretty lively if you want to grab a drink and people-watch.

Oh, and how about Night Safari at Safari Phu Quoc? You can check out animals doing their thing at night - it's all lit up and pretty neat.

Good to know: Phu Quoc's dining options range from local eateries to fine dining, including seafood shacks, street food carts, and international restaurants along Tran Hung Dao street. Phu Quoc also has two noodle specialties, Bun Ken and Bun Quay, and boasts plenty of bars and nightlife options, including speakeasies, beach bars, and rooftop bars.

6.2 Con Dao

Con Dao's a whole different vibe once the sun goes down. It's way more low-key.

The Con Son Night Market is worth a look. You can chow down on some fresh seafood off the grill and maybe pick up a souvenir or two.

If you're into stargazing, you're in for a treat in Con Dao. The night sky here is amazing - you can see the Milky Way on a clear night. Some folks go squid fishing after dark too.

Good to know: Con Dao’s dining scene has improved with new local ventures, focused mainly in Con Son town. A seafood and street food night market near Con Dao market opens at 5pm, offering fresh fish and local delicacies. The international options are limited, but Beach House offers excellent fusion dishes. For dessert, don't forget to try coconut ice cream (kem dừa).

So, Phu Quoc's got more going on at night - shows, bars, that kind of thing. Con Dao's more about taking it easy. If you want to party, head to Phu Quoc. If you're looking to chill out, Con Dao's your spot.

7. Honeymoon Destination & Family trip

7.1 Phu Quoc

Honeymoon: If you're looking for a romantic getaway, Phu Quoc's got you covered. Fancy a private dinner on the beach or a sunset cruise? They've got it all. Plus, there are tons of spas where you can get pampered together. If you want to chill on the beach or try some water sports, Phu Quoc's perfect for making those honeymoon memories.

Family: Got the kids in tow? No problem. Phu Quoc is like a playground for families. There's VinWonder Phu Quoc (think theme park), Vinpearl Safari (hello, animals!), and even a Teddy Bear House. Most resorts are super family-friendly with stuff like kids' clubs. The beaches are great for building sandcastles or splashing around. Oh, and if you want to sneak in some learning, check out the pearl farms. It's a win-win for fun and education.

vinpearl phu quoc

Good to know: Phu Quoc has a wide range of options, from budget hostels to mid-range resorts, high-end retreats, hotels, and guesthouses, with many located along the west coast.

7.2 Con Dao

Honeymoon: If you're after something a bit more low-key for your honeymoon, Con Dao might be your jam. It's quieter, but still has some luxury spots like Six Senses or Poulo Condor Boutique Resort. The beaches here, like An Hai and Dam Trau, are way less crowded. Con Dao's all about that peaceful vibe, perfect for couples who want to escape the hustle and bustle.

con dao honeymoon
If you're after something a bit more low-key for your honeymoon, Con Dao might be your jam.

Family: Con Dao will be great for families who love nature and a bit of history. The national park is awesome for hikes and spotting wildlife. There are also some interesting historical sites if you want to give the kids a history lesson (but the fun kind). Beaches like Dam Trau are safe for the little ones, and the whole family can go snorkeling. It's more about quality time together here - think board games and stargazing rather than big attractions.

Good to know: On Con Đao, several mini-hotels can be found in Côn Sơn, with pricier options along the seafront and more affordable ones further inland.

Wrap-up:

Phu Quoc's your go-to for lots of options. It's great whether you're on your honeymoon or herding the whole family. There's always something to do.

Con Dao? It's more about chilling out. Perfect if you want a quieter honeymoon or if you're the kind of family that bonds over nature walks and history.

8. Budget Comparison: Con Dao vs. Phu Quoc

Getting to either place costs about the same, but prices bounce around depending on when you go and how busy it is.

Con Dao:

It's a bit out of the way, which actually works in your favor money-wise. Sure, staying right on the beach might set you back, but you can find cheaper places to crash and eat without much trouble.

Con Dao islands rank the first place amongst 10 most beautiful beach destinations in Vietnam

Phu Quoc:

This place can hit your wallet harder. It's a big tourist spot, so everything from hotels to food tends to cost more. Whether you're going opulent or middle-of-the-road, expect to shell out more cash here.

Bottom line: If you're watching your spending, Con Dao might be easier on your budget. Phu Quoc's great, but it'll probably cost you more overall.

9. Conclusion: Which one is better?

Wrapping it up, both Phu Quoc and Con Dao are total gems for a beach getaway. It's the kind of stuff that makes you want to pinch yourself. But Phu Quoc and Con Dao each have their own vibe. Phu Quoc is where the action is. It's buzzing with energy and there's always something going on. Con Dao, on the other hand, exudes untamed nature and tranquil serenity, making it ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. If you're looking to get away from it, this is your spot.

So, which one's for you? Well, that depends on what you're after. In the end, whichever you pick, you're in for an amazing time. It all comes down to what kind of vacation makes you tick. Good luck!

Hi there, I really enjoyed your article- it was fascinating! We're thinking of spending five nights in Con Dao and another five in Phu Quoc. In your opinion, would visiting both islands be worthwhile, or could it be redundant? Your article highlighted some similarities and differences between them, so I'd love to hear your perspective on whether we should focus on just one or experience both. Best regards, Andre

I'm planning on visiting con Dao for a few days and eventually spending NYE there. I've read online that right now it's stormy and rainy. I'm also into diving and snorkeling but I'm afraid the water will be cloudy, as Friends who've been there in October reported. Is Con Dao Island nice this time of the year?

Con Dao is indeed a beautiful destination, and spending New Year's Eve there sounds like a fantastic idea. However, you're right to be cautious about the current weather. October falls within the rainy season on the island, so it can be quite stormy, with cloudier waters that might affect snorkeling and diving visibility. Many visitors who go during this time notice the same.

That said, the good news is that by late December, the weather usually improves significantly. The skies clear up, the sea becomes calmer, and the visibility underwater gets much better, making it a perfect time for those water activities. New Year’s Eve in Con Dao can also be a magical and peaceful experience, far from the usual crowds.

If your schedule allows, we’d recommend visiting closer to the end of December for the best experience. We’d love to help you plan an amazing trip there. Let us know if you have any questions or need assistance with the details!
