1. Discovery of Vietnam and Thailand: a captivating overview

map of Vietnam and Thailand
Map of Vietnam and Thailand

Vietnam and Thailand are also located in Southeast Asia, bordering the sea, offering a variety of landscapes.

Vietnam , with an area of 330,000 km2, shares its borders with China to the north, Laos to the west, and Cambodia to the southwest. It is also bordered by the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Gulf of Tonkin to the north and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.

Thailand, with an area of approximately 500,000 km2, is in the heart of the Indochina Peninsula, surrounded by the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. It shares its borders with Myanmar to the west, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south.

Vietnam and Thailand are two extraordinary tourist destinations that offer travelers unique experiences. While Thailand is renowned for its beaches, temples, and vibrant nightlife, Vietnam, steeped in rich history, diverse culture, and breathtaking natural beauty, offers an experience imbued with authenticity and tradition.

These two countries also share the distinction of being neighbors with several other Asian countries, making them perfect destinations for combined trips.

2. Vietnam or Thailand: which destination is easier to access?

Vietnam and Thailand are relatively accessible destinations when it comes to their visa policies. Starting in August 2023, Vietnam extended the duration of its visa waiver from 30 days to 45 days. In other words, nationals of 13 countries can now stay in Vietnam for 45 days without a visa (including entry and exit days). If your country is not on this list, then you will need to apply for a classic visa or an e-visa, which will allow you to stay up to a maximum of 90 days.

Thus, in terms of duration of stay without a visa, Vietnam offers a more advantageous option than Thailand, the latter allowing travelers to stay only 30 days maximum without a visa. However, Thailand offers a broader list of visa-free countries, allowing nationals of nearly fifty other countries to enter Thailand without a visa. For other nationalities, a visa or e-visa with a maximum duration of 60 days will be required. Learn more about Visa Thailand.

3. How to choose based on climate and weather?

When it comes to the climatic differences between Vietnam and Thailand, one of the most notable distinctions is their weather. In terms of topography and latitude, Vietnam is divided into three distinct weather regimes: North, Central, and South.

North Vietnam has the most diverse climate pattern, defined by 4 distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Along with this, significant changes occur every season. The Center is quite similar to the North, with extremely hot months in the middle of the year. The South offers a typical monsoon climate with high temperatures all year round and constant sunshine, with two distinct seasons: dry and humid.

Generally speaking, there are two best times to visit the whole of Vietnam: October to November and mid-March to May. These are times when the climate remains very pleasant, and what's more, these are the least rainy months of the year in Vietnam.

Thailand can be described as a tropical country and humid for most of the country for most of the year. The three typical seasons of this tropical country are the hot season from March to mid-May, the dry and cool season from November to February, and the rainy season from mid-May to October.

To help you choose the best time to visit these destinations, let's look at some comparisons for March, July, and November, which are popular times for European travel.

  • In March: Both countries are excellent destinations at this time, with favorable weather conditions.
  • In July: It is summer vacation time, and many families travel at this time. However, note that the southern part of Vietnam and some Andaman Sea islands in Thailand, such as Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, and Krabi, experience the rainy season. So it's best to exercise caution when planning your trip. You can consider other regions for your travels.
  • In November: Just like in March, these two countries offer ideal weather conditions for traveling in November.

4. Vietnam or Thailand: Which to choose for natural landscapes?

  • Thailand

Undeniably, Thailand scores better when it comes to the quality of its islands and beaches. Thailand offers the opportunity to fully enjoy the beauties of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, which give the country a varied beach landscape with warm water and some of the most beautiful coral complexes in the world. Diving in Thailand is considered some of the best in the world, thanks to its crystal clear waters, stunning white sand beaches, and rich marine life.

Vietnam, on the other hand, offers a more diverse range of landscapes. One element that makes Vietnam's landscapes more spectacular compared to Thailand is the altitude. Vietnam has the Hoang Lien Son range in the north with mountains reaching more than 3,000 meters, including Fansipan (3,147 m), which is the roof of Indochina. In comparison, Thailand's highest peak is Doi Inthanon, which stands at 2565 meters. This is why in terms of terrestrial landscapes, Vietnam is more majestic with its passes, its mountains, and its rice terraces, offering a more spectacular view.

From north to south, the country is adorned with varied landscapes, such as mountainous hills covered with rice terraces in the north, picturesque dunes, huge natural caves at the limestone caves of Quang Binh, and highlands adorned with magnificent waterfalls. Vietnam is also home to the largest cave in the world, Son Doong, located in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, with immense stalagmites reaching more than 70m high.

Vietnam, with Ha Long Bay, the country's tourism symbol, offers exceptional beauty. Located in the northeastern region of Vietnam, in the Gulf of Tonkin, this UNESCO World Heritage Site comprises around 2,000 islands and islets, forming a seascape of limestone pillars.

There are many other regions of exceptional beauty, such as northern Thailand with Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, the Golden Triangle, and the Mekong Delta in Vietnam,... However, within the framework of this article, we will focus only on the main, most memorable destinations for comparison that offer the best insight into each country. In summary, when choosing between Thailand and Vietnam in terms of scenic beauty, here are some key points:

  • If you are planning a dream seaside vacation, opt for Thailand.
  • If you dream of magnificent rice terraces and breathtaking mountain panoramas, choose Vietnam.
  • For those who want to explore historical sites, Vietnam and Thailand are both suitable choices.

6. Which countries to choose based on your budget?

When comparing costs, two key factors deserve your attention: airfare and on-site expenses. For airfare, note that flights to Thailand from Europe are generally cheaper than those to Vietnam, as there are more direct flights, and the capital of Bangkok is considered a major transportation hub air in the region.

However, when it comes to the cost of daily living, Vietnam is generally cheaper than Thailand. Accommodation, food, and transportation are generally more affordable than in Thailand. Note that the services of an English-speaking guide in Vietnam are also more affordable than in Thailand. Learn more about Vietnam travel prices.

Thailand, although relatively affordable, has seen some price increases in recent years due to its popularity as a tourist destination. However, it is still possible to find affordable accommodation, especially in areas outside the major tourist centers.

Street food and local restaurants are budget-friendly dining options, and transportation costs are generally reasonable. And if you are willing to spend to enjoy luxury experiences, there is no shortage of activities for you in Bangkok. 7. Vietnam or Thailand: the cuisine?

Popular around the world, Thai cuisine is capable of captivating your senses with its delicious profusion of flavors, textures, aromas, and the presence of fresh and aromatic spices. Many dishes feature spicy, sour, and salty flavors, which create more depth.

Like many other world cuisines, Thai cuisine is influenced by geography and varies depending on the region of the country. In the North, you will find a variety of noodle dishes, including the famous Khao Soi. Also known as “Lanna Cuisine,” Northern Thai cuisine also offers other mouth-watering staples, including Sai Oua, a spicy seasoned pork sausage.

Pad Thai

In the northeastern part of Thailand, you will taste a multitude of boiled dishes, and if you head towards the center, you will come across a variety of street markets selling dishes rich in condiments, which can be prepared with dry spices. One of the region's most famous dishes is the iconic Pad Thai and central Thailand also has the largest variety of curries in the country. If you move to the south of Thailand, you will be surprised by the number of dishes based on seafood, coconut cream, and tom yam kung.

Vietnamese cuisine, on the other hand, is renowned around the world for its fresh ingredients, vibrant flavors, and harmonious balance. From the ubiquitous Pho (noodle soup) to the delicious Banh mi (baguette sandwich) to the refreshing flavors of spring rolls (Vietnamese spring rolls), foodies will be in gourmet heaven. Add to that the decadent Vietnamese coffee.

8. Which country to choose for a family trip?

Choosing between Vietnam and Thailand for a family trip will depend on your interests as well as those of your children.

If you're looking for a variety of natural landscapes and a peaceful environment to relax in the local culture, Vietnam is a great option, especially if you're considering a homestay. This experience to dive into local life will allow you to experience daily life authentically, cook alongside your host, and teach your children to adapt to an entirely new environment, even if it offers fewer amenities. This will offer your children the opportunity to broaden their horizons and discover a richer and more diverse life. It’s sure to be an unforgettable experience for your family.

On the other hand, if you prefer to entertain your children in amusement parks, nature parks, large malls for shopping, children's play areas, museums, etc., Thailand offers a greater variety than Vietnam. When it comes to entertainment, Thailand stands out for its diversity and modernity, surpassing Vietnam.

9. Which is safest for a solo trip?

During solo travel, both countries offer a certain level of security. Still, Vietnam is a slightly more ideal choice, as some places in Thailand sometimes experience riots for political and military reasons, while Vietnam is generally more peaceful in this regard. However, you just need to take into consideration the time of your departure to make an informed choice.

10. Vietnam or Thailand for a honeymoon trip?

Thailand is more suited to a romantic vibe and offers more opportunities for special experiences like a dinner cruise, couples spa, etc. If you crave luxury and want to enjoy your honeymoon in world-class resorts nestled on stunning islands, then Thailand is the perfect choice.
